Lake Tahoe in December- Questions
 

So I'm off soon. And I've read somoe Fodors' threads on Lake Tahoe too. But I would like some winter ideas besides the skiing. And some good restaurant mid price choices in South Lake Tahoe. We will have a car, so maybe some places that are within a 1/2 hour too??

Any ideas, any public ice skating places besides the Marriott?? Any comments welcome.

You can ice skate at the ice arena on Rufus. It's indoor. You can also ice skate at Squaw Valley at High Camp at the top of the tram. It's covered but not completely indoor. Or maybe it's only covered in the summer.

So I hope there is additional snow for you there. When there is little snow, you can't do the usual skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing but hiking and other outdoor activities are limited to.

Mid priced restaurants:

Sunnyside Resort near Tahoe City, Riva Grill at the Marina in South Lake Tahoe (best for appetizers and drinks), The Cantina near the Y in South Lake Tahoe,

As long as we're including North Lake Tahoe :) , there's also skating at Northstar. Under the current circumstances (little snow), driving around the lake might not be the usual problem it is in winter. You might even want to take a drive to Truckee (the restaurant called Pacific Crest is very good, and there's plenty of shops to poke around in).

I love NOrthstar. I love all the cabanas/seating around the ice rink with teh gas fire pits. But the ice rink is super tiny don't you think? I'd go there for the live music and hanging out though! Mikuni is open there so if you like Sushi it can't be beat.

Weather and road condition permitting, my favorite free Tahoe activity is to drive around the perimeter of the lake, stopping at all of the great look out points.

There is also a tiny little outlet mall at the Y.

Oh so much thanks, I saw one of those threads but not the other one.

Hey, guess who fits into her ski coat etc. and who doesn't fit into his ski bibs? He's off to buy new today. He is a great skiier. Not me, but I'll go. He says snow shouldn't be a problem because he's done it as early as Thanksgiving there when they said they had none, but we shall see.

Regardless, I shall play poker and also have some adventures.

I will skate, and thanks so much for these suggestions and any more that come alone are welcome.

Does anyone have an excellent idea for a good hair cut or spa? It might happen.

Chains are currently (12-6-07 at 7:34 p.m.) required on 80 over the Sierra according to Caltrans.

Thank you, Michael. It's snowing here again right now near Chicago too. Everything is white and grey, it looks like a movie from the 1930's, only with twinkles.

He's an excellent snow conditions driver, and I'll make sure we have them on the rental car.

I knew if I made reservations there would be tons of snow. I got snowed in NYC during March once. LOL!
