Lake Tahoe for 100
 

Trying to arrange for a family reunion in the Lake Tahoe area foe summer 2009 for about 100 people. Any suggestions about a place that can accomodate that kind of group?

What about Northstar at Tahoe? It is on the north side of Tahoe near Truckee. I attended a conference there. We had a big BBQ, river rafting, horseback riding, etc. Info at www.northstarattahoe.com

Northstar would be a great choice, primarily because the accommodations are all condos and houses, and there is a "club" with pools, gym, sauna, hot tub, etc., not to mention the village itself. But you'd better start planning now for that many people. Most of the condos are 2 or 3 bedrooms, and sleep 6-8 people. There are houses of all types and sizes. The one thing I'm not sure of is whether there is a central facility you can use for group gatherings.

dmlove, have you been to Northstar lately? They are in the middle of a huge expansion program and have already added quite a bit in terms of conference facilities as well as more "hotel like" accomodations. I didn't get out there this winter, but in the fall a lot had been added and there was a ton of construction going on. I understand that they offer great prices for summer -- as obviously the big push there is for skiing.

NP, yes, we go to Northstar at least once a year. We were actually there last summer for a weekend -- we stayed in a small condo on Village Run (not one of the new fancy ones!). It's very different from when we started going there 20 years ago. They still don't have hotel-room type accommodations, although they are building a Ritz-Carlton on the mountain, scheduled to open in 2009. For now, there are the older condo developments (2-3 bedroom condos, off the main road, called Aspen Grove, Silver Strike, Indian Hills and Gold Bend), private houses off the main road (about half of which are managed by Northstar, and the remainder of which are either not rented out or are rented out/managed by a company other than Northstar Realty. The houses range from 2 to many bedrooms -- some can sleep 16). In addition to those, there are the new developments in the new village -- various condos, fractional ownerships, etc.

Camp Richardson is a nice suggestion, they have a beautiful beach there! Enjoy your time in Lake Tahoe. ***kim*** ((f))

dmlove, how well I know about the changes. My partner's brother and his wife have owned a condo for something like 25 years (the first group built away from the center). About 10 years ago (?) they built their new home and retired there, living there year round now. They had me flying back and forth to meet with the architects and to do the interior design work. Theirs was one of the first homes built up on the mountain (as opposed to the ones by the golf course -- I forget the names of the areas). We usually get out there a couple times a year.

My comment about newer "hotel like accomodations" referred to some of the new "smaller" condos right at the lodge and "center". I went through some and was under the impression that most are available for one week or even nightly rentals through central booking. I didn't mean that they are actual hotel rooms.

You're right - there are luxury "condo" accommodations right in the village. I've seen the pictures and the models, but never the actual units. These will be quite a bit more money to rent, but at least it gives puppo another option (I'm sure with 100 people, they'll need a variety of options!). P.S. I'm jealous of your partner's brother and family (we talked about buying there for years, but never bit the bullet -- how sorry are we now LOL?)

dmlove, yes, they bought their lot when they were "auctioned" originally. They had set a personal limit, but went way over it when bidding got frantic. They have never regretted it, and gloat every time a new block of lots goes on auction at prices that approach what they have in their entire home! It was a wise investment. (PS -- they moved up from Saratoga.)

But as a real downer to this story, Dick has been fighting colon cancer and further complications for several years and has just been taken off his third and possibly "final" experimental chemo program. He is on pain management now, but he is still working on getting into yet another experimental program. He has a great support group including two neighbor ski buddies who are both retired "nationally recognized" oncologists. It's not a happy time, but he was able to ski nearly every day this winter (until he broke his wrist about a month ago).

oops, sorry, puppo, for hijacking this thread -- but Northstar remains a GREAT place to check out for your event.

My company has used Granlibakken several times for event since we are so close to Tahoe.


The neat thing about Granlibakken is that it is really close to both Tahoe City and Sunnyside. It is also really close to the Truckee River for those who want to do a raft trip. Additionally, it's a pretty short drive to Squaw Valley in case some in your party would want to sepnd the day at High Camp.

Besides Commons Beach in Tahoe City yuou can head south on 89 will get you to a great beach at Meeks Bay.
