Lake Powell
 

WE plan to go to Lake Powell in October, 2005 on our way to the Grand Canyon. In October do they still have the float trips and what other activities should we do while there. We're flying to Las Vegas and then visiting parks along the way to the Grand Canyon, then down to Sedona and flying home from Phoenix. Any ideas would be appreciated.

We stayed one night on Lake Powell during August 2004 on way from GC to Bryce. I can't tell you about the float trips as we didn't try one. We did, however, visit Antelope Canyon outside of Page, AZ (Lake Powell) at the advice of Fodorites. It's a must see. About a 1 1/2 hour tour (45 minutes at the canyon) to see a phenomenal slot canyon. There are several tour companies in Page and we just signed up for a tour once we got into town. Enjoy your trip!

They do the float trips in October. They only have one float trip per day at that time of the year that starts at 11:15. During the summer they have two, an early morning and early afternoon. You can find more information at this website:

ccrosner mentioned the Upper Antelope Slots Canyon tour which is well worth the time and money.

The hike to Horseshoe Bend is an easy hike and it allows you to see where the float rafts go.

Taking a boat tour on Lake Powell is awesome too.

We look forward to better days for Lake Powell. Recent years of drought have made the lake shrink a great deal, perhaps down 60 feet. Lots of places no longer can be reached by boat. Abundant snowmelt and rain runoff will correct this problem, given time.

Yes, the lake is low, but that hasn't affected the float trips yet. They still have to release the water for down stream.
