Lake Michigan View - Chicago

Will be visiting Chicago in a few weeks for a multi-generation girls trip. One of the things that one of the pre-teens in our group really wants to do is to "see" Lake Michigan. I'm curious what (free or affordable) ideas you have for making this happen. I'm guessing March weather may be a bit cold for a boat tour on the lake. I'm thinking more of a good spot with great views to take in the beauty for an hour-ish. A long walk on the trail seems like a good idea, but for some of the senior members of our group, might be a bit much. Any suggestions?

How about a sort walk on the trail, or walk out on Navy Pier & get a bite to eat or a drink.
Preteen might like walking to Oak St. & putting toes in the sand and water if it's a nice day....

Of, course it is weather dependent, some of this walking would not be pleasant on a cold or windy day.

Maybe lunch or a beverage at J. Parker, the rooftop restaurant of the Lincoln Hotel,

Continue on through the south end of the zoo (free) by the gardens not the animals and go by the People's Gas pavilion
interesting structure framing a pretty downtown view

Walk through Lincoln Park and go on the bridge to North Avenue Beach

Are you going to be there St. Patrick's Day? The parade is on March 11 and they dye the river green that day, too
Where are you staying? That would affect what would be easier to do
