Lake Mead is a summer destination. It will be very bleak and cold in February. You should though drive down to see the dam but I wouldn't stay there overnight.

Well, I've never been in Feb. but according to Weather.com you are looking at an average high 59, low 42. And I'm not sure about hiking but the marina there has boat rentals and we try to spend a night or two there on trips from Las Vegas to Phoenix. The lake is a beautiful sight coming through Boulder City. It's also a nice stop if you plan to visit Hoover Dam. Enjoy.

thanks. doesn't sound that great to stay at that time of year. i'll be at red mountain spa in st. george, utah (which I love, 4th time there) and my husband is meeting me. not really the vegas types. maybe we'll just go up to zion. thanks for your help.

Zion would be my pick over Lake Mead.

Definitely Zion if that is your other choice. IMHO, Lake Mead looked like a bombed out area. The color of the water is beautiful and I'm sure it is great for boating, but in the east we like our lakes with trees around them. :-)

thanks. i'm from new York city. that's why i love it out there. it is like going to the moon. sooo different from here. the air too. so dry. will probably be too cool to enjoy the lake properly. i love zion too, and my husband has never been there. so...

We were there in early April and it was perfect boating weather, but yeah, Feb. will be chilly. Btw, I love the landscape, too--I find it beautiful, not bombed-out.

I have been there during the winter months. It was mildly warm during the day and very chilly at night.

Summer temps at Lake Mead get above 110 degrees.

bombed out? hmm, never thought of it that way but i can see moonscape.

definitely zion hands down too as a choice instead of lake mead though.

Just north of St. George is Snow Canyon State Park. Also, if you want a scenic lake, then you'd want to go to Lake Powell. You might not get to do much boating, but you could go on a boat tour, see Upper Antelope Slot Canyon and do the short hike to Horseshoe Bend.

the spa i'm staying at is at the base of snow canyon. so do a lot of hiking there. i want to go for 6 nights and then the husband is meeting me there for the last 2 nights. then wanted to go somewhere else rather close. flying in and out of vegas. so maybe 2 nights in zion and then stay in vegas the last night and go to lake mead for a day trip, just to see it, before we leave. i think that is it. thanks for everyone's help.

Our bus stopped at the lake on the way from Las Vegas to the Valley of Fire. The lake is nice, we had lunch with a view, walked around in sweaters in February, and moved on.

If you are in the area, plan a stop. If not, it's not a destination.
