Lajitas - Ultimate Getaway?
We are planning a trip to big bend for the spring. The website for Lajitas resort looks great, but the comments on trip advisor are spotty. Anyone been to this hotel? Are we in for a letdown?

Never been to the hotel, but I spent a winter down in Terlingua about 10 years ago. Great, friendly little re-invigorated ghost town. Growing quite a bit from what I hear. Greatr destination for rafting the Rio Grande, sitting in the shade and listening to the local musicians.

I think the town has changed a lot since Steve Smith bought it to develop it into a resort town. I read the reviews...not too favorable.
Have you looked into this place: http://www.cibolocreekranch.com/ It may be similar to what you are looking for. Sorry...I haven't been to either. |
Cibolo's reviews are also spotty. Plus it doesn't seem to be as great for kids (which we have). Perhaps it's too much to expect to find luxury in such a far-flung place, although I love the Gage hotel and would gladly stay there the whole time if only it was closer to the park/ river.

IMHO, it's tough to really get the full Big Bend experience if you're staying at a luxury resort with a golf course. That just isn't what Big Bend is about. I'd recommend something in Terlingua, Study Butte or the lodging in the park instead, and any of those would save driving time as compared to Lajitas.

I tend to agree - I have enjoyed many lovely camping trips in Big Bend. But we are going with my young children, my elderly parents and my city slicker husband who is deathly afraid of "nature." Perhaps I'm a fool, but I'm hoping to capture a little of the authentic Big Bend experience while catering to a slightly less adventurous crowd.

Can someone update the assessment of Lajitas?
I heard that the owner has changed. |
This article was in Texas Monthly recently:

Thanks, Pepper.
I found a more recent article which gives some information about the new owner and the new concept: http://www.alpineavalanche.com/artic...ont/news02.txt |
Hey, for what it's worth, we ended up going to Lajitas last year. I don't know what the new owners will do with the place, but I really would not recommend it based on my experience. You can check out my review on trip advisor.

Has anyone an update on Lajitas?
The reviews on TA could not be more mixed. I am especially interested in the activities they offer. Thank you for your reply. |
Anyone?
