How does one connect to the busline to the subway to go to Midtown? And how much time to allow on a Sunday midday?

Don't do it. It's not worth the trouble. If you're traveling alone, take the Express bus from LGA to Grand Central or Port Authority for $12/person.

If you insist on the bus to subway, go to hopstop.com and put in your exact destination address for best option. It's really a slow way to go and buses and subways run less frequently on Sun.

Unless you're truly destitute and time means nothing to you, don't take public transportation from LGA to midtown.

Take a cab or reserve a car service (same price, and you can pay with credit card).

In general, the M60 city bus stops at all the airline terminals at LaGuardia and heads into Manhatan. Its route along 125th St. makes it possible to connect to almost every subway line, to reach your destination.

This will be a lengthy trip, especially if you are heading to the west side.

Ive taken the Carey Bus, but dont recall where in manhatten it drops you off...

The M60 bus is the most convenient to Manhattan, and it stops outside every terminal. I do disagree with mclaurie. I take this bus fairly regularly (though only when I don't have a lot of luggage because it's a regular city bus and gets really crowded), and it's about 30 to 40 minutes to East 125th Street. Then you can hop on the 4/5/6 subway line and get to any east side hotel. The bus continues and hits all the other 125th Street subway stops on the west side, but by then you're talking about close to an hour of travel time, and I don't think that's worth it.

If you are staying on the West side, it's better to take Q33 bus to the 74th Street/Roosevelt Avenue subway stop. It's also about 30 minutes but you can pick up the E/F/R/V or even 7 subway lines there, and then it's a straight shot into most hotels in Manhattan.

You're talking about an hour of transit time either way.

I've tried the M60 thing a couple of times, and I think Doug is being generous with the 1 hour estimate, particularly on a Sunday when the bus & subway both run less frequently, not to mention your inexperience.

Agree not to do public transit from LGA unless you are truly penniless. On Sunday the trip can easily take 1.5 hours or more - and luggage on the bus and subway is not fun.


For 1 person take the shuttle bus to midtown for about $12 - and walk or cab from there. For 2 or more a cab - about $35 - wil cost about the same.

While I realize there are exceptions, I'd suggest in general, if one can't afford a taxi from LGA to Manhattan, one can't afford to <i>visit</i> Manhattan.

I'd rather spend one night in Manhattan with a modest budget than penny pinch and stay three.

I've taken the bus too and I agree that it is monumentally slow but if you're on a budget, that's the way to go ($2 vs $12). I notice that alot of younger Europeans kneejerk towards taking public transporation for airport travel. I always wind up telling them our public transport system is so much inferior to that in Europe's. It's not like you take the Picadilly line and be in London in 45 minutes.

One thing to keep in mind. If the bus trip itself is 1 hour, but you need to wait 20 minutes for the next bus, the time is already an hour and 20 minutes.

We try to meet people on the plane or in the taxi line and split the fare. Its really not too hard to find someone.

panhandle, I've noticed too that invariably there are singles in the taxi line looking to share with someone else, and they usually seem to be successful from what I've noticed.

I love arriving back in LaGuardia. With no traffic, I can be home (East side) via a cab in 20 minutes.

Yep ... and I've made it <i>to</i> LGA from the UES in under 20 minutes ... 35 minutes door-to-gate

Gekko, I think you once mentioned that and I thought you must be crazy. But this summer we flew in on a Sunday afternoon, and I'd say our taxi ride from LGA to midtown west WAS right around 20 minutes. I apologize belatedly for doubting that possibility.

No worries .. 'tis hard to believe until you've experienced it ...

literally, flying USAir, I've gone from my apartment door to my LGA gate, through security, bags checked, in 35 minutes ...

one can wait longer in the dunkin' donuts line in the terminal ...

I once managed LGA to 5th Ave and 15th in Manhattan in 17 minutes--a weeknight at about 11PM. The cab driver drove very quickly yet very skilfully.
