Lafitte House
Hi, I will be travelling to NO on business this month and I am currently booked at the Lafitte guest house on the "quiet" end of Bourbon street. It is my first time to NO and the place looks great on the web site, BUT someone has suggested that the quiet end of Bourbon street may not be the safest place to be....Anyone out there no whether or not I should be concerned. Anyone have experience with the Lafitte? Appreciate your advice...

Scott

I live a few blocks from the Lafitte. I think you are safer on this end of the Quarter than the upper, neon end of the Quarter. It is quiet, but that's because it's a residential neighborhood. You are only about two or three blocks from the loud part of Bourbon. I wouldn't wander the streets late at night alone, but then again, I wouldn't do that anywhere. Certainly take precautions - be aware, use common sense, etc. If you are ever in doubt, take a cab. It'll be the best $5 insurance policy you ever had. I've heard good things about the Lafitte. Hope you enjoy your trip.

I'm not sure what the nature of your business is in New Orleans, but you will be much to far from the main business district to walk.

My husband and I took a ghost tour for fun when we were in New Orleans earlier this year - one of the stops was the Lafitte Guest House. Ordinarily, they don't have the tours go inside and our tour was very small (under 10 people) and somehow we were in the front parlour for about ten minutes. From what we saw, it was beautiful and quiet inside. I had the opportunity to look at a room and it was very well appointed. If we visit New Orleans again, we're planning to try and stay there. Please let us know how your stay goes!

The CBD starts at Canal which is about 10 blocks from your hotel. There is a French Quarter shuttle that you can catch a block or so from your hotel on Dauphine Street. It runs every 15 minutes and costs $1.25. A cab ride to the CBD will cost you $5 - $7 bucks depending on traffic and where you are going (assuming your business is in the CBD).

Thanks to all who replied...

Just returned from my travels in NOLA and have to give a resounding thumbs up on the Lafitte. Beautiful rooms, great staff, superb location. It is just far enough from the Bourbon madness, yet close enough to safely walk to it...also it is just across the street from the best pub in NOLA: the Lafitte Blacksmith Shop.

If you go you are sure to enjoy.

Scott
One of the best - if too often unobseved - benefits of the whole Fodor's "experience" is the after-the-fact response. Thanks to Scott..and a reminder that what's useful/or not about the Fodor's advice...helps us all....

Thanks Scott for your trip update. I agree with both Scott and Meg, too, about the "residential" end of the Quarter. I'd feel much safer anywhere on Bourbon (it's only 14 blocks long) than I would downtown, for instance, where the deserted skyscrapers give one an uneasy feeling at night.

Scott - glad to hear you liked the guest house and the bar. I think that is an ideal location. So happy you enjoyed our city and our end of the Quarter.

Don't know when you're going to NO, but I tried to reserve room at Lafitte Nov 11, 12 -- Booked! It did look great. Good luck with your reservation.
