You're referring to Wisconsin, I presume?
Some nice views of the Mississippi from the Minnesota side, especially up near Winona MN (the city for which Winona Ryder is named...just watch yourself in the local Saks Fifth Avenue).
There's also a hike up a 1200-1500 foot high hill in town with some nice views. I don't remember the name.
La Crosse is pretty blue collar type town.
It's short on good restaurants and doesn't attract tourists.

Not sure how far away it might be, but if you are in Wisconsin, you might try going to a rather "interesting" not sure just how to describe it, The House on the Rock". Built by a rather eclectric collector of unusual things, and the collection is HUGE, including, tiffany glass, dolls, a HUGE merry-go-round, rooms of instruments that play themselves for a small fee.
I'll bet there is a website.
Have a fun time in the LaCross area.
