Labor Day weekend in South Florida

I plan to be in South Florida during Labor Day weekend, mainly to visit Dolphin Stadium, continuing my quest to visit every baseball stadium.

I will arrive in Ft. Lauderdale that Friday, and will leave from there, Monday morning. I have visited Miami before, and will do again on that Saturday.

There is one day I have nothing planned, and considered a day trip, but wonder which is the best option: Everglades, Biscayne NP, or Key Largo

Biscayne is a beautiful beach. Everglades is a nature tour on a boat. Key Largo is a scenic ride with water all around.

If you decide on Key Largo, I would drive 45 minutes further and have lunch in Islamorada. Prettier, several good restaurants. Better feel for what the keys is about.

You could opt for snorkeling at Pennekamp in Largo.

Check out some of the what to do in the Keys threads on this site.

Walter, my first pick would definitely be Key Biscayne! It is gorgeous!

I would look into renting a boat or getting on a boat tour.

Or you could take the beach chairs and a cooler and spend the day on the sand.

If you just want to mosey around, I highly suggest starting your day at Viscaya and spend a couple of hours there. Insanely wonderful views of Biscayne Bay.

From there, head out to Key Biscayne and stop at the Rusty Pelican and have lunch on the water. Great views of downtown Miami.

From there head all the way to the lighthouse. If you look right, you can see Stiltsville.

Spend some time at Bill Baggs State Park.

After you are done, head to Coral Gables for shopping, pre dinner drinks, and a lovely dinner.

I thnink Labor Day is too hot for the Everglades although maybe you want to sneak in a visit. You could go to Florida City and enter the park from there. Anhinga Trail is a great place to see wildlife and Robert is Here fruit stand is a fun place to stop. RIH closes in Sept/Oct. The other direction in Florida City is Biscayne NP. You could head over there when you get too hot/buggy in the 'glades. They have snorkel trips. I've never tried them but would love to hear a trip report on them. Traffic into the Keys may be tough cause of the weekend. But Key Largo is about 30 min from Florida City and there's great snorkelling there, too.

I'd suggest checking to see if that area of Florida has recovered from the flooding and storm surge from Tropical Storm Fay yet, before making real plans. Some parts of S. Florida got hammered with 20+ inches of rain, no electricity and some damage to buildings and landscaping. They may not be quite up to visitors yet.
