Labor day weekend
 

Hi!!

My husband and I (who are new to the US) were planning to visit some place during the labor day weekend. We are in our late twenties and like scenic places (beaches, country side etc.) and a little bit of activity like easy to do hikes, biking etc. (We also like to shop, but, that is not a must do) It would be ok with us to drive/fly.

Any suggestions on where we can go will be of great help!! Thanks !!

Somewhere on the Del-Mar-Va pennisula? I like Chincoteague (sp?) area of VA in that region. I'm also intrigued by the Outer Banks (OBX) in NC, though I've never been there.

Starting from NYC you have plenty of options very near to you but a lot depends on what type of vacation you are looking for. Camping, B&Bs, hotels, beach, hiking, vacation resorts, etc. Some quick area suggestions are the Adirondacks / Lake Placid in Northern NY, Bar Harbor Maine, Finger Lakes NY, Northeast PA (Ricketts Glen S.P.)or Southwest PA (Pittsburgh, Whitewater rafting, caving), Niagara falls, Cape Cod/Nantucket, White Mtns New Hampshire, Mammoth Caves KY, Asheville NC, Boston, Savannah GA, etc.

All of these are wonderful destinations but you'll need to do a little research and see what appeals to you. Once you have narrowed down a region, activity, beach vs. mtns, I am sure that others will be able to help with the specifics

Thanks for all the ideas. I had a couple of questions..
1) How will the weather be like in Savannah in September? (We might not want to go if it is going to be very warm)
2) U had mentioned white water rafting, caving etc. in PA. Can u give some more details of the places where we can go in PA for these activities...that will help us look these places up in this forum.
3)I read a lot abt Bar harbor in this forum - somehow got an impression that it is a rocky coastline, with a lot of activities for children. If there is any information abt Bar harbor that u can share with us, it will be great.

Looks like we will be doing one of Savannah, Bar harbor or some place in PA or Maine, based on what we find out...

1)to find out about weather any place, go to wunderground.com scroll down to the lower right side of the page where it says trip planner. Put in your intended location and the date you want to go and you'll get historical info on weather at that time.

Whatever you decide, don't wait to make any necessary reservations. Often places are booked months in advance for both Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.

Savannah can still be warm in September but not too bad. Typically low to mid 80s in the day.

We went to southeast PA last July and had a blast. We went whitewater rafting on the Youghiogheny River and used the Ohiopyle Trading Post Outfitters (http://www.ohiopyletradingpost.com/) who were great. We camped at the state park nearby called Kentuck Campground (http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/statepar.../ohiopyle.aspx). The state park also has the cucumber falls, a natural waterslide rock formation, and terrific biking trails. The town itself is very small but quaint. You could stay in nearby Uniontown if you are looking for hotel accomodation.

The dry caving that we did was about a 20 minute drive (near Uniontown) from the state park in the Laurel Caverns (http://laurelcaverns.com/). Definitely do the 3 hour small group tour vs. the one hour family walkthrough. You will get very dirty but it is amazing! T

The drive from Pittsburgh to the Ohiopyle State Park is about 1.5 hrs. You could always stay here if you are looking for more nightlife/dining/entertainment options. Check out Station Square and the restaurants.

It has been a couple years since we've been to Bar Harbor but it was very nice. We camped at the Acadia national park and did some hiking and took a boat tour of the coastline. The coastline is very rocky but there are a couple sand beaches throughout the park. Because it was a national park there were a lot of families but not overwhelming or anything that hindered our fun.
