Labor Day Weekend 2004: may go down in history as the worst travel weekend of the century.
First the flooding problems in Virginia closing down interstates. Second all the problems with Hurricane Francis, including the closing of Florida airports. And now LAX closed down for hours causing total chaos with all air travel in the US.
How many of you are glad you decided to stay home this weekend?

Never like to travel on a holiday week-end if I can avoid it. Here in Michigan everyone goes north on Friday and south on Sunday. The backups at times remind me of the evacuations in Florida.
Here in mid-Michigan we are having mid-80's and humid. Luckily I have a pool in the backyard and plenty of iced tea.

We were supposed to be in Orlando this weekend. We had airline tickets for Wednesday, returning to Detroit today. We changed our minds about two weeks ago (totally unrelated to the weather). Certainly made the right decision. Felt like it really wasn't meant to be.
Our thoughts are with those in Florida.

At LAX, there were 2 separate security alarms that apparently amounted to nothing but evacuations and a major inconvenience: an exploding battery in somebody's luggage, and someone who entered the gates without going thru security.

Billions spent on homeland security, and all-new well-trained security personnel at the airports.....they don't have a better contingency plan for when a wet flashlight battery "explodes"? And what good is an alarm if they can't even seem to figure out who set the alarm off?
Seems like the only plan in place for an airport incidents is "chaos".

yk, you are surely a "half full"
kinda person!
We stayed home becuase we did a
mini-vacation 3 days mid-week at The Lodge at Sonoma. (Have to make sure my local dining advice is current..)
We were supposed to do an overnight
wine-tasting trip around Healdsburg,
but then the Geysers Wildfire made the area unthinkable. Ash fell like snowflakes in Healdsburg and yesterday
on our car in Santa Rosa!
Good to be home!

Maybe like Frances, it didn't turn out quite so horrible as expected. When I started this post, it was sounding like LAX might be closed down for the day causing real chaos across the nation. But apparently it opened up just after I posted.

Gee Wiz, I thought there were people who don't live on the East Coast or the West Coast. Who knew? Since there are problems on Both Coasts I guess I am happy I did not plan anything for the holiday.
There is about 3000 miles of America between "Both Coasts". Oh my God!
