LA to Ore traveling times
according to my research, this is what I have found
LA- Bishop 5.5 hours Bishop - Yoesmite- ?? Yoesmite - Lake Tahoe-?? Lake Tahoe - Red Bluff - 4 Hours Red Bluff - Eureka - 3 hours Eureka - Cescent city - 1.5 hours Cresent city - cave junction - 1 hour Cave junction - crater lake - 3 hours do these times seem correct? we will be traveling in August melissa |
LA- Bishop 5.5 hours Yes, but why??
Bishop - Yoesmite- ?? Couple of hours. Yoesmite - Lake Tahoe-?? Couple of hours - maybe 3. Lake Tahoe - Red Bluff - 4 Hours Check. Red Bluff - Eureka - 3 hours Check - could be more. Eureka - Cescent city - 1.5 hours Check - could be more, especially if you want to stop for various groves. Cresent city - cave junction - 1 hour Check - could be more. Cave junction - crater lake - 3 hours More. And the reason for driving via Bishop in August is...? Where are you heading after Crater Lake? If back south, then why not just keep heading up the east side after Yosemite all the way to Crater Lake, then hit the coast and redwoods on the way back south? The cross-California zigzag is very tiring; neither SR 36 nor SR 299 are as attractive (IMO) as they ought to be. The few times I've taken them I've always ended up behind a log truck or six and spent a couple of quality hours (not) watching tail lights. |
We want to go to Bishop to stop and see the internment camp that was used in WW11.
I don't know where we are going after crater lake.we have 4 days until 3 have to fly home. where sould we go? Thanks for suggestions Melissa |
Melissa, you ignored all the previous advice given you and came up with this screwy route.
You're driving twice as far to see half as much. |
Well if you're going to see Manzanar, then I understand and apologize. Be prepared for ungodly heat, though.
Where are you flying home from? |
Gee, taking the Tioga Pass road is another good reason to go 395 to Bishop to Yosemite.

I don't know where I am flying home from yet . I have 4 days after crater ake until we have to go home.
I am looking for ideas Melissa |
I don't understand why you don't go 89 from Lake Tahoe, to Mt. Shasta, to Rogue Valley and Crater Lake, then take 199 to Coast and down to SF? Why do you want to go from Red Bluff to Eureka first, I guess is my question.

From all your posts, here’s what I surmise:
2 adults, 2 teens going on a driving vacation through eastern CA southern Oregon and then western CA. A convenient way to see these sights while limiting your driving would be to do eastern Sierra which includes Yosemite, Bodie, Carson City, Virginia City, Tahoe, Lassen. Then it appears you want to do southern OR around Crater Lake. To do this you should head toward Mt Shasta or Klamath Falls – you can see the Lava Beds if you do this route. You can end up at Crater Lake and the surrounding area. From here you should go to Crescent City and then Eureka. For your last 4 days head south along the northern CA Coast. It will be a relief from the August heat. End up in San Francisco and fly home. This route is much better than heading over to Eureka from Lassen/Susanville and then going to Crater Lake. |
Suzie's route is a good one. I would go from Crater Lake to Roseburg, then north a few miles on I-5, then out to the coast on Oregon SR 38, a beautiful road that parallels the Umpqua River out to Reedsport. That way, you see the best bits of the southern Oregon coast and can dally through the Redwoods down to Eureka, then blast down 101 (since you've seen SR 1) to SFO in around 5 or 6 hours.

You're the first person I've ever heard prefer Roseburg to the Rogue Valley. You really seem to hate something about the Rogue Valley, Gardyloo. Just wish I could figure out what it is.

I lived as a small lad in Roseburg. My dad repossessed log trucks for a living. Made me nostalgic.
No, I don't dislike the Rogue Valley (well, not too much. ;) ) I just like SR 38. My view on the Rogue Valley is that they don't call it "Little Dixie" for nothing. |
