LA, San Diego, Pheonix, Las Vegas
 

I am thinking of spending 2 days in LA, 4 days in San Diego, 1 night in Yuma, 2 days in Pheonix, 1 night in Flagstaff, 1 day Grand Canyon and 4 day in Vegas. I would like to know if this is a goo itinery, or if there is anything I have missed out. I am travelling with my wife and two children 20, 17 in August.

I would add a day to Grand Canyon and one less to Las Vegas.

Why would you stay in Yuma? Phoenix is hot enough in August, Yuma is even worse. There is absolutely no reason to stay there. The drive from San Diego to Phoenix (through Yuma) takes about 5.5 hours. If you leave San Diego by 8am you are in Phoenix by 1:30 in the afternoon.

Again Phoenix will be hot in Aug. Are you planning to mostly just hang out at a resort and swim? Sometimes it's even too hot to swim during the middle part of the day. Personally I would add one day to LA and only spend one day in Phoenix just because of the time of year you will be there.

I think I would add a day or two in Sedona. You really don't want to miss Sedona while you are in Northern Arizona. I was going to suggest that you stay in Sedona instead of Flagstaff but you will probably enjoy getting out of the heat. Flagstaff is very nice in the summer.

So I would suggest 3 days LA, 4 days San Diego, 1 night Phoenix, 2 nights Sedona (or Flagstaff), 1 nights Grand Canyon, 4 nights Las Vegas.

I do agree with the others that 3 days in Las Vegas is plenty. You could take one of the Las Vegas days and add that on to the Grand Canyon.

I have to admit I'm curious about Yuma, must be family or work.

L84SKY-Maybe it is. I was just thinking that the OP thought that the drive from San Diego to Phoenix was longer than it really is. It will be interesting to hear back from stevechrys.

Pheonix directly and add Sedona to the itinery. I have no time limits so its easy to swap things around.

Steve-Not to criticize but just to let you know that Pheonix is spelled Phoenix. Makes it easier when doing a search.

Where are you coming from? Again just want to make sure you are aware of how hot it will be in August at some of your locations. San Diego and LA should be nice particularly if you stay near the coast. August is monsoon season in Phoenix-yes it does rain in the desert. So the humidity can be higher than normal. It is definitely not uncommon for it to be above 110 degrees. Sedona will be a little cooler but still warm. If you do any hiking in Sedona, start early and take lots of water.
Las Vegas will also be hot but you can stay instead there more if need be. Not trying to scare you just wanted to make sure you are aware that staying out of the mid day sun and drinking lots of water will make your trip more comfortable.

Steve-Having been to London and knowing the weather there, I think the heat will be a bit of a shock. But again for someone who is not used to desert heat, keep my advice in mind if you are outside during the day.

I grew up in Arizona and honestly during the mid part of the day in summer, it is usually too hot to even enjoy swimming. In Phoenix, you might enjoy going to the Heard Museum during the hottest part of the day. You will learn alot about the American Indian culture. Then you can enjoy the pool in the mornings and late afternoons/evenings.

Steve may like the heat. I stopped in a bakery in a small village near Cambridge while I was wearing my Arizona Bicycle Club jersey. The girl behind the counter told me that she had been to Phoenix the summer before and just loved the heat!

Even with family in Yuma, I have only stopped once in 25 years of driving from SD to PHX

That's true bigtyke. We were always trying to escape it but I know that lots of Europeans think it's great.
