La Jolla Cove Suites--stayed there recently?
Has anyone stayed there? Got any idea what the rooms are like? Can I get by without a car and still get to sights and eats in La Jolla?
|
Never heard of La Jolla Cove Suites, what is the location. Many businesses like to attach their names to La Jolla, when they are not even close, so be sure to check it out. There is not much to do in La Jolla proper and public transportation is San Diego is minimal at best. The trolley has limited coverage outside of the city and some burbs. E-mail me if you want more info on San Diego.
La Jolla Cove Suites is right on the Cove on the Coast Road. Trouble is it looks very motel-like. I would prefer a beachfront place but the Sea Lodge at La Jolla Shores is full and I am not the country club type. Any ideas if not La Jolla where to stay on the beach, any beach, in the SD area?

I live in San Diego. Actually the La Jolla Cove is not too bad a location. I am not familiar with the La Jolla Cove Suites itself. You are not right on the beach but you will be very close and it is handy to everything around La Jolla proper. You will be right across the street from a small park. That area can get very crowded especially in the summer and on the weekends.

For beach hotels, my first choice would be the Hotel Del Coronado. It is a little pricey but well worth it if it doesn't break your budget. The hotel is a San Diego landmark. Many movies have been filmed there. It is right on one of th widest beaches in the San Diego area. BTW, there is an excellent Mexican restaurant "Miguel's Cocina" which is almost directly across the street from the Hotel Del Coronado. It has excellent food, service, ambience and is very reasonably priced.

Another more moderate place is the Bahia on Mission Bay. They also have free boat tours of Mission bay. I have stayed there and it is not a bad place at all.

Beach front hotels are not in abundance on the California coast.

Pacific Terrace is really nice. On the beach and close to everything.

I can't resist telling you that I've had an Ad. for La Jolla Cove Suites on my refrigerator for over a year now. It was a cute Ad. with a cartoon and a picture of the cove. I cut it out of a CA visitor's guide.

Sorry that I can't tell you anything aboutm the hotel.

There is such a wide range of hotels La Jolla/San Diego that you need to be more specific on what you are looking for. Moderate or Luxury.Hotel Del Coronado is great but it will cost you. You might want to consider the Catamaran in Mission Beach. Its a moderate priced hotel on the boarwalk/bay/beach. Luis Barrios is the manager (at least he was when I lived in San Diego). Tell him that Paul from Colorado sent you. Good Luck.

La Jolla Cove Suites is actually in a great area...it is very motel looking like you stated. But that is part of the charm of the area. There are really no hotels right on the sand that don't look like motels. So take your pick.

As far as transportation, you won't need to rent a car if you just stay in La Jolla. The city is small and you can walk to everything. There is a train that goes into San Diego and also the other direction to Carlsbad.

I might mention though the Horse Races in Del Mar. The track is running right now through sometime in September and is considered one of the main area attractions. I consider it a real blast...very nice with a lot of history.

Goodluck.

Just got back from San Diego and can tell you that the Cove Suites looks very tacky from the outside. Better to stay elsewhere and drive to La Jolla to play. Food at George's on the Cove was GREAT and the Brocktown Villa also very good. If you have kids, go to the White Rabbit bookstore, for kids books.
