La Jolla Bed and Breakfast/Salk tourlSan Diego kayak

Two recommendations if you are heading to La Jolla:

MOre than enjoyed our stay at the La Jolla Bed and Breakfast. Pretty spot, friendly reception, very good breakfast..We stayed in the Kate Sessions room which was fine for the two of us for two days. You might feel a bit cramped if you are staying longer.

A Fodors' poster recommended the Salk Institute architectural tour . Thanks--very interesting on many levels. Our docent's enthusiasm for the building, the architect, and Dr Salk made for an informative and entertaining hour. It's free..reservation only.

Had a great time kayaking. First time for both of us. IF the weather is with you, no storms at sea, you kayak into the caves and see the tide pools. Unfortunately there was a storm the night before so we could not do that. Still, it was a blast. You will get soaked, but the water was not all that cold. The guide worked with the three of us, all novices, and we returned to shore in one piece and no one capsized.

hotticket, thanks for reporting back! Glad to hear the Salk Institute architecture tour is good. I really would love to return and take that tour. May I ask how many people were on your tour? Was it just your party? And did you have a wide range of dates/times to choose from?

In case you're interested in learning more about the architect, Louis Kahn, there's an excellent documentary done by his son a few years ago, titled My Architect.

There were about 10 of us on the tour. I could ONLY go on Friday, so I did not ask for any other date. As for time, the tour is only at noon and is an hour long.

I remember that film and was sorry I missed it. I will now look for it.
Interesting story about Mr Kahn -great architect, not so great dad ,as I recall.

George's at The Cove--rooftop-wonderful grilled octopus salad. I had steak frites, perfect, the DH had grilled chicken and loved it.Pumpkin cheescake for dessert--so-so

Tapenade--what can I say? Perfection..shared a quail appetizer. I had the duck breast in a bitter-ish orange sauce that came with a duck confit canneloni--delicious. DH had the rabbit in mustard sauce served with Franch lentils. LOvely spot..elegant without being pretentious and a terrific menu.

Mediocre lunch at Cody's
Good not great lunch at the terrace at La Valencia. Really pretty place, though

Glad you had a good time. I'll never forget being at the Fish Market in SD and watching a novice capsize to try to climb back in and flip again. When he looked our way, he was mortified to find out he was in front of a restaurant with 50 people watching him...But he got back in to a loud cheer.

thanks for posting.
i live in la jolla - I don't know why but have never taken the salk tour. i think i will drag my hubby along with me soon. it's funny the stuff you never think to do when you live in a city.

i love tapenade too. it's been a long time since i've been there. it's on the pricey side and the menu never seems to change - but the food & wine are fantastic.
