la jolla beaches
We are making a trip to La Jolla Feb 16-18 to take a break from the snow. We would like to spend an afternoon walking the beach beginning and ending at Prospect Street for dinner at Alfonso's. Recommendations to go north or south for best scenery? Or if there is a can't miss beach area, we could always park at another location and drive back to dinner.
Maybe a 3-4 hour walk and avoiding cliffs. Open to any suggestions with scenery and beauty being the most important thing. |
At Prospect Street, there isn't a beach to walk, but you can walk along the coast.
To walk a beach you have to go to La Jolla Shores, and you'd be best to drive to it from Prospect. When you say "avoiding cliffs" do you mean walking along the top, because of height, or walking underneath because of potential slides? When walking at the bottom of cliffs, walk close to the water so there's less chance of being caught up in a slide. Another possibility is driving to Del Mar and walking the beach there, either direction. |
Good suggestion on Del Mar Barbara..you could have dinner at Jakes or Posiden (both okay food - nothing great imo) - that is a nice"walk" on the beach.
La Jolla is not easy to "walk" on the beach - you walk along the cliff on a path - it is very lovely imo. but different then wanting your feet in the sand/water long stroll. |
We will be staying at the Homewood Suites Del Mar in May. What would be the nearest beach to go for a walk the first afternoon we arrive?
Also what restaurants do you recommend nearby? |
nlg, the closest beach is Torrey Pines State beach.
From your hotel, get to Carmel Valley Road going west. After you pass the great little Mexican cafe on the corner on the right, watch for the entrance to the parking lot on your left. There is a charge to park there-something like $4-6. I don't remember exactly and I can't find it online, sorry. There are showers and bathrooms there and you walk under the road to get to the beach. Or, drive to the end of Carmel Valley Road then turn left and try to find a free parking space by the side of the road. There's another parking lot at the south end of the beach, but it's quite a bit smaller. |
Thanks for your reply. Torrey Pines Beach sounds great.
