La Guardia to Sag Harbor: no car

My father-in-law has asked me how to get to Sag Harbor so that he can meet friends with a sail boat on cruise. He would most likely be arriving at La Guardia airport, where most flights from Toronto arrive. My thinking is that he should take a taxi to the Jamaica station of the Long Island Rail Road and ride the train to Bridghamton and then take a taxi to the boat. Have I missed anything? Is there a better way?

A rental car is out of the question because he returning from another port.

Slightly easier but more expensive would be the Hampton Jitney (hamptonjitney.com) They have what they call the "airport connection" which works for both LGA and JFK. It's a stop off the LIE. You make a reservation and either order a car service (they'll give you the name of the co. they use) or take any taxi from LGA to this spot It's described on their website as follows:

Eastbound:
Airport connection passengers should take a cab from JFK or LaGuardia to our stop in Fresh Meadows, Queens, at the corner of 190th Street and the Eastbound Service Road of the L.I.E. (Take L.I.E.to Exit 25 eastbound, follow the service road to the front of the Fresh Meadows Cineplex Odeon Movie Theatre).

The Jitney is a big bus (with bathroom). He can either take it to Bridgehampton or SOME of the buses actually go to Sag Harbor and he could walk down to the docks.

Should have mentioned I think the cab fare from LGA to the Jitney stop would be about $10-15. The Jitney 1 way is $29 or $25 if he's over 60.

Thanks mclaurie. The bus times are much better so that is what he will take. It turns out he is travelling on a weekend and the train service is very limited then.

That's the problem with the train in general, not frequent enough. Gavin, make sure he makes a reservation. Occasionally the bus doesn't stop at the airport connection if they don't have someone getting on/off. It would also help if he had a cell phone as traffic can delay the bus. There used to be a diner right next to the movie theater where the bus stops where you could sit and wait. I think that diner has closed.

I will pass that tip along. Thanks again.
