thanks for the suggestions, we are from the midwest, our kids are very well traveled, therefore nothing will shock them, just want something to do for a few hours the day we arrive . your suggestions are very well appreciated.

I thought nothing could shock me either until I was eating my lunch along the walkway of Venice Beach a few years ago and saw a man with no arms and no legs being dragged around on a chain to the entertainment of the crowd.
Enjoy LA!!!

I really don't get what people like about Venice Beach. In my opinion, it is the worst of the Los Angeles area; lots of "tacky" t-shirt type stores, and people doing weird stuff just for the shock factor. To me, a much better way to spend a short time would be to walk around Hollywood or Beverly Hills. The Farmer's market is also fun.

I took a tour (don't recommend doing so) and they gave us 15 minutes to see Venice Beach. I was ready to leave after 5. It's sort-of-like a freak show.
Farmer's Market is fun, if you like to shop. Or Hollywood.

You're getting a car for the day, right? Well, even without a car, from Westwood you can visit the Getty very easily. It's a great experience if just for the setting, even if you don't have a lot of time to take in the exhibits. You could drive there right from the airport, have lunch at the garden cafe, walk around, and then just drive around the corner to your
Westwood hotel for 3pm check-in. No admission fee here except $7 to park.
You might enjoy a walk around the UCLA campus, especially if your teens might be interested in attending the university some day. You can also do a fun, self-driving tour around Beverly Hills and Bel Air...just try to stay out of the 4:30 to 7:30pm traffic if it's a weekday.
Or, it's not too far to the Farmer's Market near CBS, where there are lots of cheap-dining kiosks and the great GROVE mall nextdoor.
Santa Monica and Venice Beach are very close to LAX, so you could visit them on your 2nd day and then head right to the airport. Just make sure your luggage etc is hidden in the trunk of the car when parking etc.
