Know of any unusual or unique hotels?

I remember reading an article once on strange and unique hotels in the United States. Does anyone know the location of a hotel in this category, or have you stayed at one?

The Madonna Inn - San Luis Obispo, CA. Over 100 rooms, no two of which are the same; each with a distinctive theme. Info/photos at www.madonnainn.com.

Now that is definitly the most interesting place I have ever seen. I looked at every single room, all I can see now is vivid colors, wallpaper and prints! I got a kick out of the Whats Left room, all the leftovers.

Boutique hotels are often unique. Just do a search with *boutique hotel* and your destination's name in it.

What about the Ice Hotel? There's one in Lapland and one in Quebec. I suspect they close for the summer.

Litchfield Plantation in Pawleys Island is an actual 275 year old former rice plantation.

It is the best preserved low country plantation in the state. Most have lost the original farm houses but Litchfield's is intact. You can actually stay in the house.

On the flip side, you can always stay with Pedro

The Pelican Hotel in South Beach is Miami Beach's version of the Madonna Inn, run by the good people of Diesel Jeans. Themed rooms in a small hotel from the late 40s (designed by Henry Hohauser, who also designed the Cardozo, the Park Central, the Essex House and several other hotels in South Beach). You can check out their cool website at:

I'll agree with the Madonna Inn, but there is also the funky and delightful Chalet Suzanne in Lake Wales, Florida (known for their canned soups). The hotel looks like the Magic Kingdom on crack -- and the interiors are bits and pieces of every kind of tile known to man.

Railway Inn in Yountville, Napa Valley.

Old rail cars turned into hotel rooms.
About 12' wide and 30' long.

Pack a lunch when you have to go to the bathroom at night.

Check out http://www.pollywogholler.com. It's an eco-lodge B&B with a wonderful stream and interesting art. It's in South-Western New York. Try to stay in the honeymoon suite above the sauna...it's heavenly!

Here are a few unusual ones in the southwest: East Brother Lighthouse (San Francisco Bay), Pigeon Point Lighthouse (near Half Moon Bay, CA), the Delta King (a lovely old riverboat in Sacramento, CA), the Wigwam Motel (Route 66, Holbrook, AZ), and the Noftsger Hill Inn (a former grade school in Globe, AZ.) Quirky, fun, not for the conventional.

The Driftwood Inn in Vero Beach was built so long ago, like the 50's or 60's. Everything is made of driftwood, even the sink pedestals. Some local character collected the stuff along the shore, he's now deceased but someone still operates the Inn.

There are many unusal in the Midwest. The most unique I have returned to about 4 or 5 times. It is in Mendon, Michigan and called The Mendon Country Inn. It is the original horse/post/stop that existed between Chicago & Detroit when only one main road connected them, and it is also on the St. Joe River.

Every room is unique and most is original. No tvs/ no phones. Most everything else is modern. The hosts are also gourmet European trained chefs and cook a marvelous breakfast. It is the best I have ever experienced traveling and it comes with the host, Geff on piano in the huge Puddleberg Room, which was the Inn's tavern /hall during the 1800's.

One room has a ghost. They all have different themes with original furniture and decorative material.

The owners are now doing Amish weekends and other motif weekends with dinners. They do a marvelous English Christmas weekend with traditional dishes for weekends in Dec. And some are just for "girlfriends" and combine Amish crafts/ cooking /baking lessons.

Guests can also canoe on the St. Joe in season as they have a large canoe shop rental where the original horse barns were. The top is a game room/porch that is always in use during summer.

We stayed in a tree house in Hana, Maui: http://www.maui.net/%7Ehanalani/

This isn't in the United states but I stayed in a cave hotel in Turkey. It had the rather unfortunate name "Ufuk Pension". Ufuk means "Horizon". www.ufukpension.com.tr/ufuk1.htm
