Knitting needles in carry-on
 

A friend, an avid knitter, has been trying to find out if she can knit during her domestic five hour flight. She has checked with the airlines and has been told yes - no - possibly - if they are plastic not wood, but no definite answer. Does anyone know from experience. She knows that scissors are a no no, so that is not a problem.

My sister's boyfriend works at SeaTac airport as a screener. From what he told me a week or two ago, knitting needles are still a no-no. I'll try and ask him again and get back to you.

When I had a recent question regarding what was allowed as a carry on, I was directed by my airline to this Travel and Safety Administration site which details quite specifically what is allowed:

From this info, it appears knitting needles are just fine.

Problem is, the airlines can choose to be more restrictive than the TSA.

I agree with the anonymous poster, you wont find any consistent standard here. You're at the mercy of the checkpoint staff. Some actually use their brains when analyzing what can go through and what cannot. Then you have those that wont even let through rubber playskool scissors.
