Knishes
I will be travelling to New York for the first time with my daughter next month. I want to bring back something for the girls I work with. After reading every NY post on this forum (and it has been so helpful) I wonder if knishes would be a good thing to bring back. From the time I fly out of JFK and drive home it would be 3 hours. (I am from Ontario) Do these need to be refrigerated? My next choice would be the black and white cookies.
I have planned my whole trip with the help of other peoples posts from this forum. I already have my tickets for Hairspray and I have a list of must do's. My daughter (16) has her own list, quite different from mine. We have 5 days to explore the city and I think we can get most things done. Anyway... just need a little help with something New York"ie" to bring back for my friends at work. (they like food) |
I think the black and white cookies would be a better bet. Knishes do need to be refrigerated - and you can buy really good ones in Toronto, so they're not exclusively a New York specialty. But from what I understand, the black and white cookies are not well-known outside of NYC and might be just the exotic treat you're looking for.

Thanks. That was what I needed to know. I will go for the cookies. I never heard of Black and White cookies until I read it here. I missed that Seinfeld episode. :-)

Make sure that you buy the B&W's at a bakery and not a deli. The ones at delis are usually wrapped in cellophane and as dry as the Sahara Desert. Sometimes they've been sitting around for a few days and the icing has melted and comes off with the cellophane.

freeze the knishes before you leave, no problem, i've brought them back several times.

Here's a website where you can order black & white's & not have to "schlepp" them home. http://www.foodlocker.com/delancey.html
Mrs. Stahl's knishes in Brighton Beach Brooklyn are famous. I, personally, would go to Dylan's Candy store near Bloomingdales (fun visit) & choose an assortment of non-perishable stuff that can sit out for a while in the office. |
Starbuck's now sells B&W cookies at many of its shops around the country. But I'm sure they're not as good as the real NYC thing, and thanks to the Seinfeld episode, they are officially a New York-y thing, so I say they'd make a great gift. But be aware that they are iced, and the icing will melt in heat. Just keep your eyes peeled during your visit--maybe you'll see something less perishable that the girls back home would like. Have a great trip!
