Kingsmill Resort Williamsburg Opinions Please

We planning a trip to Williamsburg at the end of June. I currently have reservations at Marriott's Manor Club at Ford's Colony, but I am thinking of changing the reservations to the Kingsmill Resort. I like the location of Kingsmill better (Marriott is more remote), however, Kingmill is more $$. I am booking a a one bedroom suite at Kingsmill (on the River). Is this a decent sized room? Nicely decorated? Worth over $300 a night?

Thanks!!

I haven't stayed at the Kingsmill but I have stayed at the Fords colony - and I'm booked in there again in August. It is a drive to the "historic" part of Williamsburg - maybe 8 minutes. But the rooms are HUGE. We have a rate of $189.per night for a two bedroom two bath w/ a washer & dryer & full kitchen - The space has to be 1200 square feet. (I booked this thru Orbitz & it's the AAA rate). The grounds and buildings are lovely, (it's a timeshare property) on a golf course w/ a pool and tennis courts. Not all the services of a resort - but we'd rather opt for space and quiet, ourselves. It's a two minute drive up to the club house of the Ford's Colony country club, which has two good restaurants in it (One is very highly rated in zagats, the other is a more informal pub type.) All in all, it's a good place to stay for a couple of days.

Whoops - the rate I got from Expedia was actually $173 - not $189. Even better!

Williamsburg is fairly small and even if something seems "remote" on map it is pretty close to everything else in Wmsbg. Kingsmill is very close to Busch Gardens Williamsburg, traffic on Route 60 that is closest main road is fairly busy all day. Both places are very lovely, landscaping beautiful, and have restricted access to the property. You will have good time at either.

Marilyn,

My husband and I did a weekend getaway at Kingsmill about 8 years ago. At that time it was a little over $300 for 2 nights/3 days. We thought that was expensive and it's going to be over $300 a night for you - yikes!

I think the current price is a little steep, but there are great amenities to take advantage of - golfing, tennis, and the spa/exercise room. We wouldn't have stayed there had those not been offered. The room was a nice size - bigger than a standard hotel room and ours was also on the river. I still remember the blazing red leaves of the tree right outside of our room (we went in October).

I don't know anything about Marriott's Manor but as another poster said, things in the Williamsburg area are in pretty close proximity to each other. Even if the Marriott's seems remote, it's not like you'll have to drive a long way to see the sights.

Hope this information helps a bit.

About 3 years ago, my husband and I stayed at Kingsmill in a one bedroom suite. We loved the resort. The suite was very large, but not decorated in anything special. We paid less than $200 a night. Sounds to me that $300/night is way too much for the suite. It's nice, but not that nice.

Kingsmill is on the river with wonderful views. There is a beach with lounge chairs, fishing poles available to use in the ponds or river, and a great riverside bar/cafe with live music on weekends. It is THE place for weekend happy hours. Kingsmill also has a 4 mile walking/biking paved trail with bikes available. There is a fabulous spa there with a huge exercise room, aerobics and water aerobics classes, an indoor pool and a game room for the kids. The outdoor pool has a riverview and a snack bar. There is a tennis club and 3 golf courses plus a par 3 with night golf on Saturdays. There are 3 restaurants: expensive, moderate, and casual. The rooms aren't posh but they are comfortable and have nice balconies. If you are on the river, your view will be fantastic. Kingsmill is close to everything but it is located in an upscale neighborhood so it is back from the road. You can enter on Rt. 60 or Rt. 199. Marriott is also located in an upscale neighborhood. It is close to the outlets but on the other side of town (10-15 min) from CW and Busch. There are two restaurants. The Dining Room and a cafe. Ford's Colony has the best food in Williamsburg. There are biking trails in Ford's Colony but I'm not sure about the other amenities. I also cannot comment on the rooms. I think there are 3 golf courses which recently became private and have a good reputation. Your choice is going to depend on what you want.

Thanks to all of you for your replies. At the moment, I have reservations at both Kingsmill and Marriott at Ford's Colony. Actually, the rooms at Ford's colony sounded nicer. We would have two bedrooms/two baths and a washer/dryer in the unit. According to the website, the room is 1365 square feet -- which is huge. The room at Kingsmill is one bedroom/one bath and no mention of a washer/dryer. The location of Kingsmill is better and I'm sure the amenities and the river view would be nice, but I'm not sure it's worth $145 MORE PER NIGHT!

I will make up my mind soon.

Thanks again!

Marilyn, I would save the money and go with the less expensive place! Then you will have more money to spend on really nice dinner at Ford's Colony, shopping, any other attractions you want to see. Be sure to visit Pierce's Pit Cooked BBQ near lightfoot for an inexpensive but great BBQ lunch or dinner (get good directions from hotel - it is hard to find) and real "local" experience.

Joy,

The more I think about it, the $600 difference really is a lot of money. It would be cheaper if I booked a room without the view at Kingsmill. However, if I'm going to stay at Kingsmill, I want the river view.

Thanks for your input.

Did you check out Patriot's Place in Williamsburg? It's right across the road from the historic area, just a mile or less. Beautiful grounds, condos, a restaurant, jacuzzi, waasher dryer, swimming pool, tennis courts, etc. We're getting a two-bedroom two-bath condo for about $230 a night in July. The location is terrific.

We've spent two trips to the area at Kingsmill... and adored it both times...of course we loved the golf. a ride to Williamsburg Inn for dinner one night is a treat. Enjoy!

If you decide on the Marriott, you can always go to the spa at Kingsmill or one of the restaurants to take in the river views. Our favorite restaurant there is Eagles at the golf clubhouse. Very nice breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Or go down to the marina for a drink or simple dinner by the river. Have fun!
