Killington for fall foliage
 

Is Killington good base place for fall foliage? We are planning to be there oct 4-6 with 8 year old son. What is reasonable(<$130 per night) place to stay there?

Killington/Rutland area should be a good base. If you are able to get a condo for $130 that would be a good deal and more comfortable for a family than a single hotel room. Someone told me that they hand glide near Randolph which would be great fun to watch. The Vermont Country Store in Weston is a great place to shop but might be a little boring for a child. Visiting the Ben and Jerry's Factory would be fun, a long drive but that's what you will be doing anyways. It's in Waterbury. I strongly recommend making the trip fun for your child. Check to see if Brandon VT is having their scarecrow festival. See if there are any country fairs scheduled. A fun but long drive might be to take the ferry across Lake Champlain from Burlington and visit Ausable Chasm in NY. My husband loved it. We spent a week in late June exploring VT. It's a very beautiful state but you are not going to find fast food restaurants every few miles. Rutland has some but then I think the next city with a large commercial district is Burlington. There's miles and miles of farmland and some good hiking opportunities. Pick up some Vermont guides at a visitors center.

Killington is a village unto itself, much different atmosphere than Rutland {more touristy and expensive}. Rutland is a small city. You'll do fine if you use it as a reasonably priced base to eat and sleep, though a condo may be more to your liking. You might also want to check out Woodstock which is a charming small town not far from Killington. Woodstock does however, fill up quickly during foliage season, so you would need to make reservations early.

I'd also check into the Mad River valley. It's really central, and provides easy access to Stowe and Mt. Mansfield, Waterbury (home of Ben & Jerry's), and the towns of Warren and Waitsfield.
