Kids want to see snow

My 15yo and 9yo Hawaii kids want to see snow for our next vacation. When would be the best Wasington State or Tahoe destination, time and hotel for winter activities? Planning now for next winter season.

Tahoe usually gets its most and best snow starting in mid-January, so MLK Birthday or President's Day are usually great.

This kind of reminds me of an expression that I heard from time to time when I lived in Sacramento, CA. It was "going to the snow." It meant, of course, going to the mountains to play in the snow. For me, growing up in Spokane, Washington, as I did, "going to the snow" would probably have meant stepping off the back porch.

I'd suggest Tahoe, but the area around Snoqualmie Pass in Washington State would also be nice.

Have fun when you go to the snow!

If you went right now there is PLENTY of snow at the higher elevations - this has been an amazing snow year, was still dumping measurable amounts a week ago.

But sf7307 has it right for 'normal' years . . .

Tahoe snow is OK to look at but not so great if they want to ski or tube. There is still lots of snow at Crater Lake NP and Mt. Bachelor SW of Bend Oregon.
Check mtbachelor.com for current conditions.

"<i>Tahoe snow is OK to look at but not so great if they want to ski or tube.</i>"

Huh?? OK, I guess -- if one has never heard of Squaw Valley, or Heavenly Valley, or Alpine Meadows, or Northstar or 10 other ski resorts. Sometimes the mind just boggles . . .

Did Tom mean just now for skiing or tubing? And not next winter like the OP asked about? I would arrange for a January visit to Tahoe to ensure there was snow.

"<i>Did Tom mean just now for skiing or tubing? And not next winter like the OP asked about?</i>"

Who knows? It could have been my comment about the snow up the hill right now . . .

(I was kidding BTW - I knew the Kieko was asking about next winter. Guess I need to ALWAYS remember the :) face just to make things clear)

Suzie Jun 10th, 2011 09:19 PM

Wel FWIW I knew that's what you meant. There is sooooo much snow there especially for this time of year!

Sorry if I misled anyone about the snow quality of the Sierras vs. Oregon snow. If you fall while skiing you will feel the difference. They call the late season snow "Sierra Cement" for a reason.

Tom: "<i>If you fall while skiing you will feel the difference. They call the late season snow "Sierra Cement" for a reason.</i>"

Who the heck is talking about <u>late season snow</u>?

The OP is asking about a trip next winter.

OK - let's get this thread back on track-- sorry for the detour keiko4hanae. What else do you want to know?

Suzie Jun 11th, 2011 08:57 AM

Who falls? LOL The term Sierra Cement has to do with the high water content and arrives in storms that are warmer but not every storm and not all snow that falls is the same. Spring skiing can be icy in the morning and slushy in the afternoon but winter skiing can be pretty darn good.

I only saw winter activities in the OP so not sure if skiing is on their itinerary...

Susie, my good friend always says her best day skiing is the day she doesn't fall at all!
