Kid-friendly campground with cabins in PA/DE/MD/NY/NJ?
 

Well...our (expensive) vacation plans got thrown out because of $30,000 in bills for a three night hospital stay. Ouch! So...

Four kids and a week off. We have to do something CHEAP. I'm thinking of renting a cabin at a fun campground - know of any within a few miles drive from a Philadelphia suburb?

Jellystone seems cool - just not sure what their reputation is.

Don't know about the local campgrounds- but KOAs are usually very kid friendly and fun (programs, swimming pool/hot tub) and most have cabins

Yogi Bear campgrounds have been around @ least since I was a kid (1970s). My Mom was a widow and bought a VW Bus Camper and wanted us to be able to travel regularly and we've been to both Yogi and KOA. I've enjoyed both I think now they have many more activities for kids @ Yogis then when I went. Back in the 70s there was a mascot Yogi that handed out some candy and there were movies at night. Now I looked in a Yogi brochure recently the Mill Run, PA one and there were a whole slew of organized events for kids. I remember liking KOA's bathrooms more though (clean with alot of shower and toilet stalls).

Right! The showers are why I stay at KOA:) (semi private, clean, and all the hot water you could want)

lisabees- are you going camping just to camp, or are you going to explore the nearby sites? Is there somewhere specific you (or your kids) like to vacation?

Thanks! It would be nice to explore one or two off-site attractions etc., but we would love a laid-back, kids happy, Mom and Dad chilled "camping" experience.

One more thing - I meant a few hours drive from suburban Philly - not just a few miles!

Thought about a state park? Don't know about where you're going, but ft stevens and nehalem (oregon) have cabins/yurts and lots of children fun/educational programs....and KOAs are convenient as well as very friendly and well kept- but state parks are prettier w/more to do.

I don't know if you will get any thing this summer in terms of cabin rentals.
We were looking this summer for a cabin or rv to rent and found very little this summer.

We stayed at this campground right outside Cape May and loved it:

It was quiet, but they weren't sticklers about noise after certain hours. (In other words, you could sit by the campfire all night without being bothered by security patrols, but no one was rowdy.) The cabins are air-conditioned. It's NOT in the wilderness -- the campground is bordered by a fence -- but I liked that. (No need to clean up for fear of bears.) Friendly staff, easy drive to Cape May and the shore.

It's really a great park, and kids seem to love it. It's about four-five hours away from Philadelphia, near Altoona. You could visit the World Famous Horseshoe Curve while you're there. :-)

Of course, cabin availability may be a problem, but it's worth a shot, anyway!
