Kiawah or Hilton Head?

My wife and I are planning a trip for a week in mid-October. We were thinking of trying Kiawah Island or Hilton Head. From my research, the weather looks ok that time of year. Also, we would like to stay somewhere where we can take our dog along. We don't necessarily need a place that allows dogs on the beach, we would just want to rent a place that allows dogs. Any ideas about which location is best? What about the time of year, will we enjoy it there in mid-oct?
Thanks

I live in Charleston and my preference would be Kiawah. Hilton Head is nice too, but I would suggest Kiawah.

If you are taking kids, Hilton Head is the way to go. I'll admit I've never been to Kiawah but I have family who've been there and they've enjoyed their stays.

Hilton Head is a great place and this year will be my 5th visit. Our family goes every 4th of July week and we go to the fireworks show in Shelter Cove. We've also been the the show in Sea Pines and both are spectacular. You'll definately want to ride your bikes to The Salty Dog Cafe located in Sea Pines. It's a neat little place. We've stayed in Sea Pines and Shipyard and both have great bike trails. If you go you've got to rent bikes...best mode of travel!

The beaches are clean and great and it's easy for the kids to meet new friends. I've also seen plenty of dogs on the beaches as well and most condos do allow pets. There are a variety of restuarants, my favorite is The Oyster Factory. They have great food and ambiance.

I'm partial to Hilton Head but feel that any vacation on the beach is perfect, regardless of location - as long as it doesn't rain!

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the ideas. And thanks for the link for petswelcome - Deborah, I'll check that out.
Jenalr, What about "beach weather in October"? I think my wife will want to be able to spend some time on the beach, do you think it will be warm enough in mid -October?

This is ironic because I was just coming online to research this very thing, and found this post when I pulled up text search. We are also planning a trip for October. No dog, no kids, love golf and fine wine/dining, late thirties. Which do you think we would prefer, Kiawah or Hilton Head? Thanks!

If you are bringing kids, Hilton Head is better. HH has better restaurant options at varying price levels. Kiawah is much quieter. There are tons of dogs on the beach -- I bring my dog there every year at the end of August. Early morning and late afternoon are great dog times on the beach. (the beach is basically empty and a well trained pooch will enjoy playing in the waves). HH has a more crowded beach.

The South Carolina Coast is gorgeous in October. The weather is around 85 degrees, low to no humidity, and the water temps are still very warm.
