Keys in January
 

What is the weather like in January? I'm looking for a nice place to spend my 10 year anniversary. What is there to do in the Keys? I've also read about Sanibel Island but am unsure about the weather in January. Any suggestions?

The last time I went to the keys, the weather was in the mid eighties with no humidity. Which key are you thinking of visiting?

There is a lot to do in the keys. You can dive, snorkle, fish, boat, shop, dine, sightsee etc.

For all first time visitors, I highly recommend investing in a copy of The Florida Keys by Joy Williams.

Thanks for the reply GoTravel! I have been to Key West one time and didn't care for it too much. So, I guess I'm open to suggestions about any where else :)

I want a beach, a nice hotel and shopping. I have never snorkled and diving doesn't interest me.

If you didn't like Key West, I suggest looking outside the keys.

If you want nice beach and nice hotel, look at the new Westin Diplomat Resort in Hollywood, Florida. It re-opened last year after a multi million dollar facelift from Westin.

Hollywood Beach is just about the most gorgeous beach I've ever seen in my life. It is just north of Miami Beach.

I personally think Florida is iffy in January if you want really warm weather. The Keys only average in the low to mid 70s F, not sure this is warm enough for you. Take a look at weatherbase.com and worldclimate.com for historical temps and rainfall. The Keys would be better than Sanibel, which is a bit further north and average temps are a degree or two lower. You could of course luck out and get a hot, sunny week in January in either place, but statistics are against you.

To get hotter weather, you need to go further south into the Caribbean.

Agree with Cicerone, Keys can be iffy in January. We went in January 01 and temps were chilly at the start of our stay. It did warm up towards the end. Stayed at Kona Kai in Key Largo which is pricey but a very nice place to stay. Highly recommend exploring in a kayak.

I'll just reiterate what the other posters have said. You can't really rely on great weather in January. We were in Key West for New Year's Eve several years ago and it was cold and rainy. If a good beach is important to you, I'd rule out the keys altogether.
