Key West while pregnant? in March?

My husband and I have never been to Key West. We want to get away somewhere warm but want to stay in the US. We don't want to go to California so we decided on Florida. Is Key West a good spot for someone who is going to be 5 months pregnant? Also we are thinking late March... how is the weather? any tips for a pregnant couple? We also wondered about Marco Island?

If your doctor says you can travel go for it. Key West is a walking town which is a great way for you to get some excercise. Weather should be good then. One thing about Key West is there are really no beaches. If you are into a beach vacation, I would opt for Sanibel or Captiva over Key West and Marco.

I agree with Buckeyemom, but with one reservation. If there are springbreakers there (I know the subject of Spring Break in the Keys has been talked to death here) then it MAY (emphasize may) be a little more chaotic than usual.
But it is a great, relaxing place to stroll and take in the sun.

Pregnancy is a normal healthy state for most women. If your MD says your healthy then why worry. Relax and have fun. There are no special tips, you're a normal expectant woman, not a piece of fragile china.

Have fun.

Regards,

Mom of 6 and a labor and delivery nurse.

Meems..you are pregnant, not ill. Have a good time. You should be able to do all things you could do before except drink and scuba.

I went to St. Bart's at 4 months and had an OK time. I love wine and margaritas so I did not enjoy the non-drinking aspects of our vacation. But I felt OK - maybe a little too chubby for a bathing suit, but other than that I was fine. You can go snorkeling and walking so you will be fine. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids and get off your feet to rest often, just to make sure you don't get overtired or overheated. If this is your first child, really try to enjoy each other. It is fine after the baby is born, but your focus is very different than when it is just two of you.

Amen, Jersey and doc!

I both skied and did aerobics pregnant and it was a state of mind and being that my husband and friends appreciated. I loved being pregnant, but loved even more being a healthy, vibrant, independent, expectant Mom. No waddling, no tummy rubbing in public. It's a neat picture. If all has been going well with yours, as I guess it has if you are making the trip, there is no reason not to go and have a (non-alcholic) blast. If you are interested in beaches, though, go to Marco, not Key West, where they really don't exist.

I went to Key West at about 6.5 months during my second pregnancy. Our trip was in mid to late March, I believe. I really enjoyed it, especially the relaxed pace and the seafood.

We took a sailboat tour a little way out into the Atlantic. The only problem was snorkeling in somewhat choppy water. I had to breathe a little fast because of the pressure on my lungs/diaphragm, and couldn't manage the snorkeling.

I did tend to get hot easily, although the weather itself wasn't really hot yet. I had to sit down in the shade more than usual. It will be important to be able to lie down for a few minutes each day around noon, also to avoid overscheduling.

I was in Key West last week with my sister who is pregnant, the fact that she was pregnant was a complete non-issue, which it's always been for both of us on any of many trips we've taken while pregnant. The only thing I wouldn't do is go horseback riding or ski, neither of which should impede your enjoyment of Key West.
