Key West to Fort Lauderdale driving time
We see some old posts re: the route and driving time but ours is a bit more specific: We are going from Key West to Fort Lauderdale on Memorial Day to try and catch a 5 pm flight out. How much time should we allow?
We are from California and are used to gridlock traffic (yuck) but are just trying to figure out if we will be able to enjoy our last morning in Key West or if we need to leave at some terrible pre-dawn hour.
Any advice is much appreciated!

If it were me, I'd leave about 9am and stop for lunch along the way before I got out of the Keys. Memorial Day will be packed with travelers along the only road in/out of the Keys. And getting to the airport early wouldn't be a bad idea, either.

You may find some pretty heavy traffic from boaters coming back to Miami and Ft. Lauderdale from the long weekend. There is only one road to get out and it's a bi-way road, one lane each way. If there is an accident it'll probably take an entire day to get out.

Last Memorial day week end our son drove from S Ft. Myers to Key West and it took him about 7 hours going down and about 9 hours coming home on Monday, due to an accident on US 1...so leave plenty of time to get to the airport to drop off your car and go through security.
Our Key-West daughter can 'usually' make the Ft.Myers/Key West trip in about 5 hours.

If you don't mind spending the extra $$, you can always fly back to FLL. The cheapest flight would be Florida Coastal Airline for around $91 (including all taxes -- booked directly with the airline.) The snag is that they leave at 8:30am and arrive at FLL at 10:00am. However, you could always grab a cab to the Marina Marriott (or a shuttle if they have one) and check your bags with the bell captain so you can take the Water Taxi to either the beach or Las Olas Blvd for lunch and/or relaxation before your flight home.
