Key West Speed Limit

Going to visit Key West during Fantasy week. Will arrive Miami 11:30 P.M. and plan on driving straight through to Key West. What speeds can I do without worrying about speed traps? How about the speed on the way back to Miami (during the day)?

First of all, I don't condone speeding.
But heading into the Keys (above Key Largo), people do tend to drive, um, fast. In fact, it's sorta like the autobahn. However, if there's ever an accident (which happens frequently), then traffic is shut down for sometimes hours.

Let me mention one thing: Around Big Pine Key you will enter the Key Deer Refuge. The speed limit drops, I think, 10 mph at night in this section. (The cute little deer have a tendency to wander into the road, and at night, well, you can figure it out.) The police WILL stop you is speeding.

Watch your speed!

Cops will be particularly viligant on US1 that week.

On Deer Key, you also risk some federal offense because of the protected deer.

Speed limit is 55mph and often drops below that.

You should make it in around 4 hours but only because you are driving in the middle of the night.

Drive safe tna don't speed!

Most of the way into Key West is a two lanes road. Do you want to get there...drive carefully and at the speed limit. Traffic is going to be heavy that week and there are lots of accidents. The worst accidents in south florida are on that road.

The road between Miami and Key West is the LAST place I'd speed, especially during Fantasy Fest week when patrols are particularly vigilant.

I've made that trips lots of times (driving the speed limit) and it always takes around 4 hours. Relax, enjoy the trip, but DON'T speed!!!

Don't speed. They will pull you over. I know because a few years back we got a ticket and if I remember correctly we were going 62 in a 55 zone. The 18 mile stretch seems to usually go at a fast pace but it is also where many accidents do happen.

Go Travel,
I also thought Fantasy Fest does not start until this coming weekend -- 22nd -- but things really get going towards the middle of the week?

SuzieQ, I'm a week ahead of myself. FF isn't until next week.
