KEY WEST - RAIN, RAIN, RAIN - HELP!!!!
We have been planning our vacation for 9 months now. Will be leaving for Key West on Monday, September 1 and staying for a week. This is a vacation that we have planned for our 30th anniversary. I have been checking the weather channel for next week and all I see is RAIN, RAIN, RAIN. Please tell me that it rains in Key West as in other parts of Florida that we have visited in the past with only a quick shower in the afternoon. I am so sad that it will be raining for our whole vacation. If there are any Key West residents that read this post or if you are a frequent visitor to Key West, please tell me that next week will not be a total washout. Maybe I should just stop checking the weather channel and see what happens when we get there. But I have a lot of time and money invested in this vacation and just anticipating a soggy week is making me very sad. If anyone can help me feel better, please, please do. Thanks is advance for your help.

When we have visted this time of year there are quick afternoon or early morning rain showers and thats about it. Its usually sunny the rest of the day. Don't worry, that rain might be a welcomed thing to cool you off from that Key West heat.

It rains almost everyday in the summer. It should be a quick shower.

... head over to the Green Parrot, have a Mexican beer with lime. listen to the chickens and wait it out. Don't fail to stop in the t-short shop next door. In a lull, run down to the Hogs Breath off Duval for a second one, and then over to The Iguana on Greene for conch chowder and alligator tail subs. The rain can be a blessing.

I agree, for once, with pch. The green parrot is the best place to escape for drinks. Dont sweat it,the climate is tropical and showers dont last long.

Just a wprd of warning .......... Some of the streets in Key West flood very easily. Be ready to walk/ride through a few flooded streets after a good down pour. It happened a few times to us one trip.

Thanks everyone for the quick responses. I feel much better now. We have been looking forward to this trip for a long time and I really can't wait to get there. We are staying at the Hyatt Resort and Marina and I know we will have a great time. Thanks again for the messages. They made me feel a lot better.

We went to Key West in July and I watched the weather report daily before we left. It called for rain-everyday showed big black rain clouds with thunderbolts. I thought the vacation would be a washout! We had one short afternoon shower, that's it. It was so hot we were almost wishing for more rain. So, relax and stop checking the weather. Have fun!

As a Naples resident (just 90 miles due north of Key West), let me assure you that all day rains are EXTREMELY rare. On the other hand don't be fooled into thinking the brief shower will cool things off -- instead it tends to turn the air into one giant steambath!!
Be prepared to drink lots of water (in addition to other liquid refreshment) as you really need the water in the Florida summer heat and humidity. |
I live in Sarasota, FL and we've had beautiful days, but horrible rainy late afternoons and flooding. Very rarely will you have rain all day though. Just remember the previous posting about the flooding in Key West and have a great time. Make sure you visit the bar called Irish Kevin's at night. You'll love it.

Relax, you will have plenty of sunshine. It always rans somewhere in south Florida during the summer rainy season. If there is not a tropical depression or hurricane, the showers last from 10 minutes to an hour. If a front moves in your prophecy will come true. If it rains get lunch or a beer at the 1/2 shell raw bar!!

... apparently KW is in for some 24-hours rains, per today's forecast, which was sponsored by the Green Parrot. They are of course fibbing, in the hopes of attracting new clientelle for beer during the storms. Go to KW and relax - you're more at risk from chicken bites than all-day rains.

If it rains all day just do the pub crawl. You have 1 drink in every bar in Key West. Trust me you won't mind the rain one bit.
