Key West -- Late August
Granted it's hurricane season, but is it worth it trying to go to the Keys in late August, early September? Also, can you spend more than a week in the Keys? All and any advice is appreciated. |
Depends about how you feel about walking around in high heat and humidity.
That's what people do in Key West. In other parts of the Keys, people fish and "lay out" on the beach or by a pool. There will be breezes, but there will also be intense sun and a thunderstorm every afternoon. I think a week is pushing it unless you like to fish, but if you don't mind the heat, you could do one of the days in the Everglades or do a couple of nights in Miami. |
We went to Key West in August and enjoyed it, but it was extremely hot. Key West offers enough to do for a long weekend - the Hemingway House, sunset at Mallory square, Mel Fischer Museum, Conch Train, Dry Tortugas, as well as snorkeling and glass bottom boat tours. Mangoes is a great spot for dinner. There was also an aquarium there, but it seemed a little run down when we were there.

We spend 4 to 6 weeks in Key West every year but I wouldn't consider going in August. It's REALLY hot and humid.

It can depend on where you stay. I stay at the Pier House which has its own small beach and access to the ocean so the time I went in August the H & H didn't bother me. I'd read for 1/2 hour then swim for 1/2 hour. Later afternoons were tough for walking arond but not too bad for sitting at the many places where you can sit outside, in the shade, with a cool breeze and drink; e.g., the Rooftop Cafe, El Meson de Pepe, Kellys.

I've done the keys in summer and it isn't fun unless you are on a boat out over the water.
That said, no matter what the weather I'd rather be in Key West than at work! |
We stayed at the Marquesa and loved it; we especially loved having the pretty pool in the back. The heat was beastly, but we're from Houston, so we're used to it.

Thank you all for your responses, they have been very helpful. My wife will be nearly 5 months pregnant at the time, and being NY'ers, very hot weather is the last thing she wants.
Looks like Canada, thank you all. |
