Temps average mid 70s in January but you could also have some cold days.

The closest thing to a beach is at the Wyndham Casa Marina. If you go to Key West expecting beaches like you find in other parts of Florida, you will be very disappointed. Key West sits on coral rock and all the beaches are man made with sand brought in from the Bahamas.

This sounds bad but when I think of Key West, there is no such thing as 'best beaches' more like the lesser of several evils.

Weather will be beautiful...nights could get really cold..well it all depends where are you from.
How about key biscayne if you want beaches, or Miami Beach. Even though I find Key West lot more attractive and charming. There is some swimming close the Trumann White House, end of Duval Street.

Chances of 80's are slim. Also, since it sounds like you are intersting in swimming/beaches remember that it is typaically windy in the winter so you've got mid 70's temps, with a wind that makes it feel like low 70's. You decide if that is beach weather.........

Make sure you avoid Key West raceweek unless you enjoy being surrounded by thousands of sailors. You can find the dates on-line but I believe it starts around the 15th this year.
If you can't plan around raceweek, then take the attitude "if you can't beat them, join them" and I'll see you at Schooner Wharf

One caveat about the Casa Marina if there's a cold snap during your visit: it doesn't have heat!
