Key West in August

As a former Miami resident, I am well aware that August is smack dab in the middle of Hurricane season. I want to ask if anyone has been to Key West in August and what the rain situation was like? I don't mind the heat (like I said I was a former Miami resident). I just don't want to get there and be rained out or worse hit by a storm. Let me know.

KW is very hot in August. It actually gets a little less daily rain then Miami. (A lot of the rain Miami, S. FL area is due to the everglades). However, it can rain, but I don't recall that it had the torrential sort of daily down pour that Miami can get in the summer.

I think there is a website called worldclimate.com that you can use to check historical weather information.

Hope this was helpful.

I have a Fodor's travel guide that lists the August highs and lows in Key West in August as 90 and 79. For the same time period in August, the highs and lows in Miami are 88 and 77. As you know, hurricane season doesn't end until the first of November. Should you take a chance? Who knows! I never think of hurricanes when I go to Key West, but we normally only skirt that season.

Well, we're kind of stuck. My boyfriend and I wanted to go somewhere by the sea and gay friendly and cheap for our anniversary in August. It was either P-Town (which is in high season then, therefore hard to book and expensive) or Key West (off-season, therefore cheaper). We did Cozumel in the summer one time and it wasn't bad (The heat is bearable when you wear a bathing suit most of the day). I asked the guesthouse what their cancellation policy is before we book. If a hurricane hits Key West during our visit, I don't want to pay for that!

It seems that in Florida it always rains in August but for only an hour or so in the afternoon. Just a thunderstorm to wet everything down and then the sun comes out. Not an all day drenching. Just go and have a great time.

I've been to the Keys in August too many times to count. It WILL be hot, and humid, and sticky. As long as you're near the water, though, there should be a cooling breeze. Usually (and I underscore the word usually), it rains in the afternoon for about 30 minutes than clears. And this, of course, just adds to the humidity. As to hurricanes -- well, that's anybody's guess. But to tell you the truth, I never worry about 'em when I go to the Keys.

Well, this all sounds encouraging! I think it's a go then for Key West.
