Key West - Food!!!

My Fodors research turned up these expensives and these moderates - what did I overlook? Your ideas please - travelling to KW next week! Thanks.

Cafe des Artistes - Cafe Marquesa - Michael's - Louie's Backyard.

Blue Heaven - Alice's - Half Shell Raw Bar - Mangia - Pepe's - Mobster Lobster - El Siboney - B.O.'s Fish Wagon.

Other suggestions?

Yes to the above except I've never heard of Mobster Lobster. Can't say anything about it.

We really like Mangoes--ate there twice in October.

I don't know about Mobster Lobster either but A & B is good if you want lobster.

I second Blue Heaven, El Siboney and B.O.'s Fish Wagon from personal experience.

Have heard recently that Louie's Backyard isn't as good as it should be. Great place for a drink though.

Would add Seven Fish for a small, casual place with really great food.

I was not in the least impressed with Half Shell Raw Bar, thought the food was mediocre at best. Nice view of the docks there though.

And, although people blast it as 'a tourist trap', we've had pretty darn good food several times at Conch Republic Seafood Company. Huge menu, and the only thing that wasn't good were the raw oysters. Way small. But the boiled and broiled shrimp were awesome. They also make a very good Mojito.

Have a great trip.

Many thanks to all of you for the feedback - I made notes and I'm taking them with me! Again, many thanks!!!!

Definitely Cafe Des Artistes! Fantastic!
Not impressed with Michael's at all.
I've also heard Louie's has gone downhill, so we didn't go there the last time we were in KW.

Blue Heaven and Pepe's are fun and unusual, El Siboney is delicious and a neat cultural experience.

Mango's is great for lunch and to sit out on the patio and watch the amazing sights of Duval.

Bagatelle is nice for drinks and lunch, but dinner can be uneven. It's right on Duval, and the porch of the gorgeous house is a great place to sit and relax while you sip a cool drink.

Have a great time - I'm jealous :)

Cafe Des Artiste - One of the best there but last I heard they were going under renovations.
Marquesa - Never cared for it. Too many flavors going on in one dish.
Louie's - Forget about it. Over rated, over priced, food is so-so.
Blue Heaven - Wonderful!
Alices - WOnderful!
Half Shell Raw Bar- A must do!
Magia - ok for Italian but there are other places there. There is one on Duval called Antonia or Antonios which is better.
Pepes - good but pricey for dinner
El Siboney - never tried it but always heard good things
B.O. Fish Wagon - very good
Mobster Lobster closed I think.

We had a wonderful meal at A&B Lobster House on the 2nd level. We also fell in love with 7 Fish and Michaels. We didn't care much for Louie's the first time we were in Key West so we never tried it again. Same with the Marquesa. We liked Mango's for pizza but found the rst of the menu very over priced and not too good.

Michaels, Square One, Half Shell Raw Bar, Alonzo's Oyster Bar, El Siboney, Banana Cafe are all SOOOOOOO good!!!!!

For great Cuban sandwiches, try Cuban Brothers Grocery. The food is cheap but delicious!! And believe me, you will want some inexpensive food after being in Key West for a day or two--I thought many of the restuarants were over-priced. I also liked Mangia, Mangia for Italian food. Rick's Blue Heaven is great--but also expensive. If you don't like chickens running underneath your table while you eat, you might want to skip it. For a one time experience, however, it's really good.

Another vote for 7 Fish. It is really good. They are only open for dinner and I think they are closed one day a week and you must make reservations but it is very casual.

Alice's is excellent! I agree with Nancy about Mangoes being a great place for lunch, I always try, to include it in my trips to Key West.

A&B has some of the best lobster bisque you will ever have!

Tom Dec 3rd, 2002 06:11 AM

Be sure and suck down some oysters at The Half Shell Raw Bar.

Max Dec 3rd, 2002 06:27 AM

If you like cold water oysters you must stop in at Alonzo's Oyster Bar. They have several to try and they are so much better compared to warm water ones.

Many thanks to all!!! You've given me enough for the four days I'll be there. Many thanks!!!!

Max Dec 3rd, 2002 06:33 AM

Have a great time and be sure to report back!

Blue Heaven and Pepe's were my favorites.

And I have to confess to falling in love with the chocolate-covered Key Lime Pie on a stick from the Haagen-Dazs store on Duvall.
