Key West Experts: can't remember the local name of what I ate...help!

When in Key West this past fall, we have something similar in New England we call fried dough, but this was just a tad different, more fluffy - the vendors called it something else...you could still pour cinnamon or confectioners sugar on it...anyone know what the name of it was?
thanks !

escargot,

You can find those pretty much all over the Southeast.

My favorites are the ones I can get at the North Carolina State Fair.

I just don't eat that way, but I treat myself once a year.

(Just don't eat them in a black sweatshirt on a windy day...)

LOL Diana - Isn't that the truth! I love Indian Fry Bread. Funnel cakes can be good but Fry bread is softer! Probably hard to find though outside of Arizona, Colorado...

I think fried dough has to be about the most universal food. Is there anywhere that doesn't have a variation of this?

I hear funnel cakes and I think Texas State Fair...first place I ever saw or heard of them, and they were yummy. Sinful, but yummy. I sort of thought it was a Texas "thang" and Key West really surprises me!

We didn't have time to vacuum it and my hubby said we better just hope they don't get worried over what all the white powdery substance was.....in this day and age....drugs...anthrax....but we didn't get a call !

Fun link, Milemarker0.

Malasadas are what we ate growing up in Massachusetts.

escargot, did you try conch fritters while in the Keys? I think I like them better than the clam cakes I grew up with in New England. They have a little more of a "kick" to them.

Ivk, I grew up in MA too, but in the Berkshires, and never heard of Malasadas. I just googled them and they talk about it in relation to Portugal or HI. Did you grow up in New Beford by chance???

Ivy, I couldn't try conch fritters, but hubby did and loved them. Unfortunately, having grown up clamming, fishing with a drop line etc, and eating seafood all my life in New England, when I had my 2nd child during pregnancy became allergic to all seafood and shellfish.....oh how I miss clam chowda and the rest, but enjoy watching others enjoy....my hubby ate everything that swims and crawls on the ocean floor in the keys and was in heaven.

I want to try and make funnel cakes for a party, but couldn't remember the name !

Funnel cakes are a big Pennsylvania Dutch thing, like pretzels are, and can be found all around the eastern part o the state. They're especially good at summer fairs, such as the Kutztown Folk Festival!
