We will be celebrating our 10th anniv and have managed to get Grammy to agree to watch the kids for a week from Nov. 17 - 24. As reluctant transplants to Ohio from the Charleston SC area (Isle of Palms), we miss balmy beachy weather and thought Key West might just be the ticket in November. We hope to find a simple charming (but not precious) 2-BDRM cottage or something w/kitchen where we can have some privacy but also stroll to rests and bars. We will probably want to take active day trips (diving, kayaking, etc) and then return back, maybe have a swim, shower, and margarita, and then on to enjoy the walking around and eating and nightlife.

Anyway - I'm getting carried away here - any recommondations on where to stay, what to do, etc? Oh yeah - budget. Let's just say that we don't want a 'resort' experience, even if we could afford it.... Thanks!

Island City House has both one and two bedroom units with kitchens. Some of them have really nice semi-private (meaning someone might walk by) verandas.

We also stayed in a small cottage at Merlin Guesthouse that had a kitchen. It wasn't fancy, but it was cute and private.

Last Thanksgiving we stayed at Cypress House, not a full kitchen, but we did have a fridge and microwave. Loved the people there. Great happy hour every night.

I would consider the above properties sort of the 'middle tier' of B&B's in Key West.

JeanH is soo right about Island City House. My favorite place in KW. Cypress House is nice and not as private but they have a fabulous breakfast each morning. You can also check www.keywestinns.com - complete with photos and online reservations. Make a stop at Finnegan's Wake while in KW ! You probably aren't going to KW for Irish bars but.... nice place and they have great food too ! Sort of out of the way and not as touristy... more locals there.

Make sure your hotel is in old town. Key West is perfect for all the activities you are looking forward to do. It is a very relaxing town, is like the clock slow down once you get there.
