KEY WEST - SHERATON SUITES

WE ARE PLANNING A TRIP TO KEY WEST THE FIRST WEEK IN SEPTEMBER FOR OUR 30TH ANNIVERSARY. HAVE NEVER BEEN THERE BEFORE AND ARE THINKING OF STAYING AT THE SHERATON SUITES. HAS ANYONE STAYED THERE THAT COULD GIVE ME ANY INPUT? IS IT TOO FAR AWAY FROM DUVAL ST. AND OLD TOWN THAT WE WOULD HAVE TO TAKE A SHUTTLE? I NOTICED IN THEIR INFO THAT THEY HAVE A COMPLIMENTARY SHUTTLE TO THE AIRPORT AND OLD TOWN? DOES THIS MEAN THAT THE LOCATION IS TOO FAR AWAY FROM EVERYTHING THAT IT WOULD NOT BE WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE? ANY INFORMATION THAT YOU CAN GIVE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP.

Yes, it is too far for walking. If I were staying there (and I wouldn't) I'd definitely want a car. Shuttles are not dependable in getting around, and taxis can be far and few between. Bicycles might be an alternative, but I don't think I'd want to be biking that busy road, and I'm not sure of an alternative bike route.

For what it is worth a friend of mine just spent a week at the Sheraton Suites with friends (one works for Sheraton, so they had a free large and beautiful suite). But my friend, who goes to Key West at least once a year, found it the "worst" place I've ever stayed there" because of the very inconvenient location.

By the way, next time please unlock your caps key. All caps indicates "shouting", and is harder to read.

Stay at The Key Lime Inn on Truman Ave in Old Town. No car is needed and you can walk to a lot of places. They also have bikes for rent ( really cheap ). You will not even need a car.

I was there last week, it is a good location if you want to lay on the beach since its right across the street from Smathers beach the only real beach on the island. It is to far to walk, if you rode a bike its not that far. We took the hotel shuttle all the time it leaves the hotel at the top of the hour for downtown, then loads downtown and heads back to the hotel between 20 and 30 past the hour. Its easy and conveniate, you dont want to drive downtown theres nowhere to park that doesnt cost you 10 bucks. We would take the shuttle downtown and a cab back after the bar since the shuttle does stop running at 1130 at night, the cabs are fairly cheap though. The Hotel has a nice pool, they are also very nonintrusive, we brought girls back to the pool and noone ever questioned us about it. I would stay there again, but definetly haggle with them we found out the hard way that we could have talked them down 60 dollars a night!!!

If you dont want the beach or a nice pool I would suggest staying downtown though, the rooms on the south side of duval street are "Gay friendly" so if you dont want to see that then stay closer to the North side.
Also stay away from Papa's restaurant, they had bad service and bad expensive food, they gave us a bottle opener to open our own beers, the opener was broke and got metal shavings all over our glasses and they could have cared less.

The hotel was very nice. Dont pay extra for waterfront unless you're on the 3rd floor. The 2nd floor looks at the parking lot. It's clean. We took the shuttles & eventually drove our car, due to the inconvenience of waiting to be picked up in town . It was May & the parking wasn't bad at all. However, the beach across the street was closed due to e-coli.We were glad to be away from the loud drunks & vagrants sleeping on the sidewalks. It wasn't a great impression of Key West. Maybe it was poor timing. But, we have no desire to return.

Our anniversary is also in September and we spent our 25th in Key West. We stayed at Ambrosia House, it was nice, but we prefer Island City House. We had a good time, but two of the restaurants on our 'must do' list were closed for the month, Blue Heaven and Seven Fish. I think this is a yearly vacation for them. Just so you know.

As for Sheraton Suites, it looks like a nice property from the road, but I wouldn't stay there because of the location. Part of Key West's charm are all the funky B&B's and the interesting architecture to be seen as you wander by. We had friends who stayed at Sheraton Suites last year and the shuttle broke down so they ended up having to take cabs everywhere for a day or two.

There are some homeless sleeping around Duval Street, but they certainly aren't threatening. Make sure and spend some time down by the docks. Great bars and restaurants. Jean
