That's good to know, cmcfong. I've been using the FF ever since it came out and haven't ever noticed a difference. But every time I use it in something new, I wonder if that's gonna be the time...

Dang! I wished I liked key lime pie.
My best friend makes the little bite size version for her granddaughters' tea parties. They have a cute name for them, but can't remember it right now. Wow, Nellie and Joe's are going to wonder why the sales surge in the middle of August! :-) |
Wow....I love kl pie, but am definitely not an expert. So, am curious. DH and I just recently each had a slice at Famous Dave's BBQ,(midwest rest. chain)and we thought it was pretty awesome. Anyone ever eaten one there? And on a scale of 1 to 10, (10 being high), what were your thoughts?

Mr.GoTravel uses nothing but graham crackers, walnuts and whole butter in his crust.
Of course only Nellie & Joe's Key Lime Juice. Hmmn. I'm stopping by the restaurant for a large piece. |
Forgot to add that he doesn't using topping of any kind either. Eggs, lime juice and condensed milk.

I had never had key lime pie - so i bought one at Trader Joe's after reading this thread. is it anything like the real thing?

are all the food forums broken down today or something?

Funny story here -- my stepson mentioned he loved Key Lime Pie, so I decided to make him one, using the recipe on the bottle of Nellie & Joe's Key Lime Juice. Turns out what he ACTUALLY meant was that he likes his Dad's version (that's all he has ever had), which is a refrigerator pie, made with limeade, cool whip and sweetened condensed milk. No baking required. Just mix together and pour into a premade graham cracker pie shell. Silly me, I was separating the eggs, baking the crust, etc.

hey rbtraverler......your comment DID make me crack up (out loud), but in my mind, travel and food go hand in hand......

If you can possibly find little Mexican or Key limes in a local grocery store, or maybe in an ethnic market, use those instead of the bottled stuff. The limes are about the size of a large walnut and are light green or yellow-green. It's worth squeezing every single one of the little things to make the pie. They are generally available in our main-stream grocery stores here in the SF Bay area, and I've also seen them at Trader Joe's packaged in a green mesh bag. I add a teaspoon or two of grated lime rind to the recipe to punch up the flavor.

Gracie, here is that recipe for Key Lime Pie that is low-fat, requires no baking, and is a very acceptable substitute for the real thing:
Low-Fat Key Lime Pie 1 8 oz container of fat-free Cool Whip 2 tablespoons Key Lime Juice 1 envelope of Kool Aid lemonade mix (the small one) 1 8 oz container of fat-free sweetened, condensed milk 1 Keebler reduced fat graham cracker crust Using a wire whip, mix the first four ingredients in a bowl. Spoon into pie crust and refrigerate. Optional additions are the zest of Key Limes, and it is properly decorated with slices of lime. It's delicious and festive-looking topped with slices of kiwi arranged in a pattern. |
NOOOOO!!!!
Key Lime Pie doesn't have the topping!!! You've bastardized the recipe!!! :-D |
small smount of trivia: most key lime products don't actually have real key lime juice in them as there are very few key limes left. I suspect that nellie and joe is also using "key" lime juice from limes other than authentic key limes.

KSWL -- thanks for the low fat recipe. I can't wait to try it.

You're welcome! Everybody loves it; don't tell them it's low fat until they're already eating it. They won't believe it :D
