Stayed at the Hungry Pelican a couple of years ago. Cheap definitely and really nice couple who owns the place. Hard to define "funky" but check out their website to see if it is what you are looking for:

hungrypelican.com

Neptune's Hideaway. They, too, have a web site. And I've seen some spectacular sunsets there.

Sunset Cove motel!! We loved it; the other guests were very nice and a manatee visited the dock every day (2 yrs ago). Not sure if it's cheaper than other motels you might find, but it's funky. If there's anybody who doesn't think Sunset Cove is funky enough, I don't want to meet them. You'll see what I mean from the pictures on their web site. I wish I could tell you their URL but it's not where it was two years ago. If you go there (or to any other motel along that stretch, such as Neptune's Hideaway), be sure to get a room by the beach, well away from the road (traffic noise).
