key largo diving

Does anyone have any suggestions on a dive shop to use in Key Largo? We would like to do shallow reef dives rather than the deeper wreck dives as we are only recently certified. We will be staying a the Marriott for a week at the end of July. Thanks.

There are many good dive shops in the area. Slates (305-451-3020) and Quiescence (305-451-2440) are two that come to mind. The Pennekamp state park boats are also good to dive with. You'll need to check with the shop to see where the boats are going that day.
You should also consider a day trip to Looe Key Reef (off Big Pine Key,MM 29.5). It's a shallow spur and groove reef system that is a great, yet shallow, dive.
Have a great time!

It's A Dive is the dive shop at the Marriott. It was a GREAT dive shop and they allow you to store your equipment upstairs at the shop, which makes it very convenient. Their boats leave from a dock right on the property. They will take you out to the Pennekamp reefs which are all shallow dives.

Since you are staying at the Marriott you'd be crazy to use another company. We had some wonderful dives, including a night dive at a wreck that was a blast. The wreck wasn't very deep and after a few dives you should be ready to give it a try. Have fun. I hope to go back soon.

Here's another vote for Quiescence, which is easy walking distance from the Marriott. I dived with them a few months ago, and found them to be well-equiped and professional. We dived on several reefs and 'wrecks' (actually, more like the metallic remains of a wooden ship that has completely rotted away) that were all less than 40 feet deep.

John Pennecamp State park has a wonderful day trip to the reef. The reef is protected and has alot to see. There are also many protected areas to dive where spanish galleons wrecked 100's of years ago. Check out the book store or library for info. Looe Key is another dive spot and dive boats can get you there also. Enjoy.
