Keweenaw trip lodging advice

Thought I would see if anyone had ideas for lodging in the Keweenaw area. I am looking at going for a week in mid to late June or early July of 2009. I am pretty familiar with the UP and northern Wisconsin, but have never ventured to the Keweenaw Peninsula. I will be traveling with my wife and 4 yr old boy and 1 year old daughter. We rented a house last year in the Boulder Junction, WI area and had a good time. I am trying to avoid jumping in a plane with the kids (even though we have been to Alaska, Banff/Jasper and Bahamas with our 4 yr old.)

After reading some material on the chamber website, it appears that most people stay in the Hancock/Houghton area. There are a few nice places in the L’Anse-Baraga area, but I don’t know if that is too far or Copper Harbor for that matter. I will probably spend a day in the Copper Harbor area, a day or two in the Houghton area going on the mine tours etc, possibly a day trip to Marquette.

I’d prefer to stay on Lake Superior/bay waterfront rather than an inland lake. Probably will do minimal fishing in a boat at this point with little kids. Is the Chassell area a good central point for seeing the Keweenaw. My price point for a week stay is in the $700-$1,100 range.

I am looking to rent a house that is somewhat secluded, or a house that is part of a lodge/resort. I am not interested in staying in a hotel/resort.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Joe, You probably want to center your search on the Houghton/Hancock area. The Keweenaw is a much bigger area than you realize and the only way to get to the northern part of the peninsula is through Houghton/Hancock.

Chassell is at the southern end of the Portage Channel, which divides the peninsula. This would put you on Baraga Bay.

Another suggestion is to go as late in the summer as possible. This will help with black flies.

Good luck with your planning. DS just graduated from Mich Tech last week and we love the area.

Thanks for the advice SuzieTrue. I ended up renting a house in the Eagle River area. It is right on Lake Superior with a nice beach. We are going the first week in July, hopefully the flies are gone by then.

Check out VRBO

http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals...pper-peninsula You should be able to find something in your price range there.

I've used the site before and been very pleased.

Joe H,

You will love Eagle River. You are very close to Copper Harbor and Brockway Mountain Drive.

For what its worth, these are the sites I looked at when researching. There were a few other oddball rentals, but these sites are pretty comprehensive of all the lodging in the area.

For this area, there wasn't a good selection on VRBO.
