Keens Steakhouse?
My wife, daughter and I will be in NYC in May and I am thinking about having dinner at Keens. Wife and daughter are steak lovers and I love good lamb and have heard that Keens Mutton Chops are quite good.
Can anyone advise as to the overall quality of this restaurant? Also, is the wine list fairly good? |
I've never been and always wanted to. Zagat's gives it raves on all accounts, and says "You'll never have mutton anywhere else".
I've walked by and it looks neat. Have you seen their website? www.keenssteakhouse.com |
It's a very olde world charming looking place but seems more a winter atmosphere to me. I've never had the lamb. The steak is good, but not the best in town.
An alternative to consider if you can get a reseration is BLT Steak. Rack of lamb is excellent there. |
Ah, but McLaurie, it isn't the lamb that is famous at Keen's, it's the mutton chop -- big difference.

I've been and liked it. It has a nice, old world atmosphere and I thought the steak was very good. Haven't had the mutton chops.

I know Patrick, but OP said he likes "good lamb."

The food was delicious, but the atmosphere is quiet, reserved. If you are simply going for the food, you will love it! My husband and I enjoy more lively steak places like Delfrisco's and The Palm.

Thanks for the replies. We will most likely book Keens and see how it goes. Part of the charm, so I've heard, is the incredible collection of clay pipes owned by regulars from many decades past. A very dear friend of mine who recently passed away (at 89) told me about going there with his father when he was young and that his father owned one of those old pipes.
Since he hadn't been there in more than 20 years he couldn't give much in the way of a current recommendation but did tell me that his recollection of the Mutton Chops was that they were good. I'll be more than happy to report back if anyone is interested. |

While waiting for a table ask if you cans see some of the private rooms upstairs! Lincoln Room is especially interesting, there is a playbill from the Booth Theater that is supposed to be the ONE that Lincoln was holding....you know the rest!! JOHN |
