KC Day Trip with 2 Teenage Boys

I recently moved to the KC area and am still learning what is around here. I am interested in some day trips that would be interesting to teenagers. My 14 year old son has a friend visiting and we are looking for something fun and active (preferably) to do. Museums are not their thing.

Any suggestions?

KC Watersports near Hillsdale Lake is pretty cool. It is one of only 4 water board cable parks in the country. http://www.kcwatersports.com/index2.html Have lunch or supper at Hillsdale Bank BBQ.

They might like to do an Haunted Atchison Trolly Tour. They are mostly in the fall, but there are some coming up on the first weekend in August. http://www.atchisonkansas.net/v_haunted.htm On the way up, you might do the driving tour of Fort Leavenworth. The Corner Pharmacy in Leavenworth is a beautifully restored old building with a classic soda fountain. http://www.kansastravel.org/cornerpharmacy.htm

The State Capitol Building in Topeka has free tours that include a climb to the top of the dome. http://www.kansastravel.org/kansasstatecapitol.htm For lunch go to Seabrook Tavern & Grill. The whole family can split a 3 pound hamburger and mountain of French fries for around $20.

Cedar Cove Feline Conservation Park in Louisburg is a preserve for tigers and a refuge for big cats which were abandoned or neglected. On weekends you can take guided tours. http://www.kansastravel.org/cavecovecats.htm Go on Saturday and tie it into an evening visit to Powell Observatory http://www.askconline.org/powell.htm a visit to Louisburg cider mill and supper at Timber Creek Bar & Grill.

Go to a Royals game if they are baseball fans

Not too original, but kids of all ages enjoy Oceans of Fun & Worlds of Fun. On a hot summer day, it's nice to buy the dual pass and go back and forth between parks. Go to their website and you should be able to find some discount options.

I forgot to mention the College Basketball Experience in the new Power and Light District. Not something I would pick, but there is a good chance it is something your son would enjoy.

Skip the Royals! Take them to a T-Bones game if they are into baseball. More fun, less expensive, and the guys on the team are there for the love of the game. Free parking, entertainment between innings, and lots of kids--great fun.
