My husband and I are planning a trip to Kauai in Nov-Dec 2020. I am looking for recommendations on where to eat (especially breakfast and lunch). We like local restaurants where you can get fresh food and not overpay for it.

Where are you staying on Kauai? What town or part of the island?

So are you going and prepared to quarantine for 14 days? Have you looked at the regulations?

I agree about checking the regulations regarding their Covid requirements.

The mandatory quarantine is currently not in effect, but visitors need to obtain a negative Covid test result within 72 hours before arrival. The test must be performed by a Hawaii-approved provider.

With Covid numbers soaring everywhere, it's entirely possible Hawaii could change its rules in the coming days or weeks.

Yes, I just read that in the Times--AND that cases in HI have decreased by 20% or so as have hospitalizations. Great news and shows that rules WORK--plus being surrounded by water!!

I live on Kauai. I can't access the NYT article, but I assure you that at least on Kauai, the number of infections are increasing at an alarming rate. For many months we had no cases. Since the 14-day quarantine was waived October 15th (for those arriving with an approved negative test taken w/in 72 hours of arrival) we have had new cases every day. A few days ago there were five new cases. We have had 49 or 50 new cases since October 16th. Prior to that we'd had a total of 42 cases in seven months. These might seem like low numbers, but bear in mind that we have VERY limited medical resources, including only 9 ICU beds. For this reason, some locals are not exactly happy with the arrival of tourists as they see as potential disease spreaders.

If we reach a daily average of 5 new cases a day Kauai will revert to the mandatory 14-day quarantine. The mayor is currently trying to institute a shorter quarantine followed by a mandatory retest. This is because at least 9 people showed up on Kauai with a negative test, took a voluntary second test three days later -- and tested positive. The governor is resisting this proposal because it will hurt the economy. But be prepared that the rules could change at any moment.

One new thing, instituted yesterday... If the test is not approved upon arrival for any reason, arriving visitors and residents must quarantine for the entire 14 days--even if the negative results show up the next day (which makes no sense to me). I just heard on the news that in many of the cases where test results were not accepted it was because the name or birthdate didn't match exactly. So be very careful!

Now, if you tell me what part of the island you'll be staying on, I'll see if I can make any restaurant suggestions.
