Kaui hotels for the elderly
 

I'd like to take my Mum to Hawaii, preferably Kaui. She's in her 70's and can't exercise much- can't walk up hills, stairs, can't walk very far because of some heart disease. She's more used to cruise ship travel. I'm looking to stay at the Hyat and the Princeville Hotels. Would these be reasonable for someone like her to get around, or do they require stairs/lots of flat walking,going up hills?

So, why not do a Hawaiian cruise..and you can do shore excursions and she can kick back if she desires.

Thanks for the reply. She's already done the Hawaiian island cruise and decided that she wants to try staying on an island, andthe only island she wanted to stay on was Kaui.

The Hyatt in Kauai does have elevators, and you could request to be in the Shipwreck building which is closer to the pool. The other building would be a farther walk to the pool. The hotel has the variety of bars and restaurants around the lobby, so that she wouldn't have to leave the property, get in and out of the car each time she was seeking food or entertainment.

I would think any hotel in the U.S. would be OK for your mother. Hawaii would be under the same laws as the mainland. They all have to comply with ADA. I realize some places are "grandfathered" in, and may not comply, but I'm sure the major facilities are in compliance. Some hotels can require a fair amount of walking, depending on what wing you are in etc. but I'm sure they would have a wheel chair available for your mother if the distances proved to be more that she could handle. Sometimes the hotel websites will list handicap facilities among their amenities, or you could call the hotels directly. I know the Hyatt on Maui is pretty handicap accessable. Hope you manage the appropriate arrangements and can have a nice vacation with your mother.

When we stayed at the Hyatt it was a LONG walk to everything. The hallways went on and on. My mother died from emphysema, and I know she couldn't have made it down those halls those last few years. Why not look at a B&B like Gloria's Spouting Horn or a condo?

The Princeville Hotel is much more "compact", because it is tiered down a bluff, rather than spread out (as the Hyatt is). The Princeville Hotel has 2 banks of elevators which allow access to all areas of the hotel with ease. And I'm sure that if requested, they would put you in a room close to the elevators so Mum's walks would be limited.

The hotel also offers a free shuttle to the nearby shopping center, golf courses, spa, and fitness center.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your comments. I think we might split our time between the two. I didn't want to get into a situation where she would have to walk uphill or up stairs (I dare not mention the "w" word- you know, <whispers> wheelchair)
