Kauai's "Blue Hole"?
 

There is a tour you can book on Kauai called the Blue Hole adventure (http://www.bookithawaii.com/cgi-bin/...ivity/185.html). It gives directions that seem to lead to the same spot that the Ultimate Kauai's "jungle hike" starts at.

Has anyone done the Blue Hole tour? Is it a spot worth seeing? And does anyone familiar with the UK book know if we could get there on our own just by following the trail for the "jungle hike"? The tour group seems to feel it's an easy hike.

P.S. Is Kauai boring? Do I need a passport? Where's good to eat on Kauai? Is $4000 a good price? I'm going in mid-July, will there be children there? I see camping permits are required, does that mean me? I love to swim in murky water at dusk, will I get attacked by a shark? Finally, will I like it there?

Can't help with no blue hole, but there is a neat little blow hole:-" in southern Kauai near Allerton Gardens.
P.S.Reply-You do not need a passport document to visit Kauai (nor a passport radar/laser detector). Follow ultimate guide (Kauai Revealed) eatery suggestions. $4000 sounds high but how many nights, airfare included?((?)) Suggest ya stick to the resort pool/jacuzzi for dusktime swimming, plenty o' "land sharks" may join ya. You should like it, some consider it one of the most ((R))beautiful((R)) places on earth.:S-

I wish I could answer your Blue Hole question,

however, I suggest you cancel your plans, Kauai is a bore, the food is terrible unless you spend about $40 an entree with no view..you could starve here...the whole island is known for daycare and their daily local kids jumpup at the resort pools, the more kids the merrier! There are about 998,964,000 people each year turned away from camping since the whole island is so congested with campers, and the sharks....they snake themselves thru the plumbing and are in pools everywhere..so if the crowds of kids pee in the pool and make it murky....well....you're fckd unless you bring bear spray which I heard on the learning channel will also work on underwater mammels....yeah you should definately cancel and go to someplace nice....say the super8 in Orlando.............heeheehheee

Thanks, but I think that's the same tour that I first looked at. It's cool because it tells you exactly how to get to the trailhead, but beyond that I'm unsure, and even more unsure if it's worth any of our time. There's so many other things we want to do, I'm not going to worry about this one!

Does bear spray work on tourists who feed the fish on the reef? Especially the ones who "know it's wrong" but do it because "everyone else is doing it anyway"...I swear that happened at Honolua Bay last year when we finally said something to the umpteenth person we saw fish-feeding.

Me 'n' my bear spray are goin' to Orlando! Next stop: Mickey's eyes!

OK, Roxy -
You finally got me interested in the blasted mythical "blue hole". The website you provided describes and shows the spillway that starts the irrigation system to the Lihue Plantation. It's hard to imagine why they call it the "blue hole"?! I guess it's all in the journey, because the destination itself doesn't look all that breathtaking. I wonder if this is the same irrigation system that they do the tubing trip on? I was thinking about doing that on this trip to Kauai.

Ultimate Kauai guidebook is lukewarm on the tubing thing. They make you wear a helmet to lazily cruise at 2 mph? Weird.

My impression is that the helmet is there just to support the light apparatus. Since you go through some dark tunnels, I guess the feeling that you're a spelunker adds to the excitement! Wooooo! Might be fun for my ten-year-old.

On Kauai I usually refrain from doing anything that requires a 4WD veh to get to. Respect for the land an all.

Then again, most times I refrain from doing things that require me getting off a barstool or up off a lounge chair.

Headed for Kauai and would like to do the tubing trip with my daughter - but can't find a way to do it for less than $85 - which is nothing short of robbery. Anyone know if we can get to the "ditch" and plop in on our own without having to pay an outfitter?
