Kauai winter weather?
We're thinking of going to Kauai for Christmas break next year, but we're a little concerned about the weather. Would it be a better idea to look for sunshine on Maui? Any input is appreciated...

Alexa, I may be presumptious but, if you're a hard partying college person ("Christmas break"), then I'd suggest Maui since there is more nightlife and activities than Kauai.

Other than that, we've been over to Kauai for New Year's for the past 6 years and have always found the weather to be just fine. One trip it rained maybe 3 days where you really couldn't do outdoor stuff...but it was still 80 degrees!

The past 3 trips we've been lucky enough to stay 3 weeks and have hit absolutely gorgeous weather. Some minor drought conditions the past few years.

The trick we found on Kauai is if it's raining on one side, go to the other and there's a good chance it won't be.

The north side (Princeville-Hanalei area)does get more rain especially in the winter months.
It is a beautiful island and good beaches...not as crowded as Maui.

We may run into you there since we have 148 more days to go...but who's counting!?
Mahalo,
Kal

Thanks, Kal, for your input. You're right, I am a college student, but definately not hard partying. I'm actually looking for good hiking, snorkelling, and other outdoor activities, as well as great beaches, which is why Kauai appeals to me. Thanks again for your help!

-Alexa

Alexa, Then Kauai is the place!

You may wish to type "Kauai" in the Fodor's "text search" box and get some good suggestions about this beautiful island.

A college budget may put you in a east shore hotel/condo, good price, central location, cheap to expensive eats-depending upon your mood.

However, I have read numerous posts on here where you can get some good bargains in Poipu or Princeville.
The only prob w/ baragins is that it's the "high" season and you may have to work harder to find them. Worth the time and effort for this Garden Isle.

You'll love it!
Kauai no ka oi!
Kal

Kal, I have another question for you: How's the snorkelling on Kauai in the wintertime? Are the waves too rough?
