Kauai - why one side vs. another?

I will be traveling to Honolulu for a convention next summer. From what I have read here, if I want particular resorts, I better get planning now.

I'm thinking to go to Kauai for a few days. I read that one should stay on the north side in the summer and the south side in the winter. Why is that?

I have reservations at the Hyatt Kauai, but thats on the south side in the summer. I thought all sides of the island were okay for swimming in the summer.

Thanks. T.

south side is fine in the summer, too.

staying on the northshore is wet during the winter.

just a general rule of thumb...

No problem swimming on the south side in the summer.

The north side of the island gets more rain than the south side year round, but particularly so in the winter. However, all that rain means that the north side is more tropical with more greenery than the south side, which is why some people like it there. Also, Some people find the south side to be a bit dry in the summer, although you still get the occasional rain there.

At the same time, the surf is much rougher on the north side during the winter, which is why people advise going to the south side in winter.

The island isn't that big so whichever side you stay on you can drive to the other in 1 to 1-1/2 hours depending on traffic.

By the way the Hyatt is the absolute best place to stay on the south side.

I am going to Kauai for my HM in early October. I could not decide between the two so I split the time 1/2 and 1/2. The North Shore is much more lush. But the Hyatt is gorgeous so we are staying there, too!
